Freda family

Hi all,

I am searching for information on my paternal family, the Freda's. I don't know a lot since my grandfather was the second or third youngest in his family & by the time I became interested in my family history my grandfather was quite old. I know my great grandmother, Carmela was born in 1879 (died in 1925) and came over from Italy around 1884. Her maiden name was Manzione. She and my great grandfather settled in Orange, New Jersey. Her mother was named Elizabeth (maiden name Maltine) & she was born around 1856. From what I know my family came from the Province of Avellino. My great grandfather was born in 1876 & his name was Carmine. I think he had a brother named Angelo (born in 1878) who had a son named Salvatore born in 1910. Angelo settled in Orange, New Jersey as well. Carmine and Angelo had a nephew who came over from Italy named Salvatore Freda, born in 1891. I gathered a lot of this information from the US census records of 1910 & 1920.

Any help would be appreciated. Like I said before, my grandfather was pretty old by the time I became interested in the family history & most of his siblings had already passed away as well.

Yes. Well actually there are two family trees on there. One by me & one by another cousin who I just met. We connected on ancestry & then on Facebook. Gotta love technology.
And I LOVE the pictures. I'd never seen them before until this past Christmas. My grandmother had them and my aunt gave them to my dad. Those pictures are from around 1910 or so. My grandfather hardly changed in all those years.
I really do appreciate any help.

Here are possible WWI and WWII Registration Cards for Carmine.

They list his DOB as July 15/16, 1880 in Italy. (Naples is listed on WWII card)

Wife is Carmela Freda (Millie on the WWII card), and they live in Newark, Essex, NJ

Carmine's occupation is listed as Barber

I saw those & I don't think those are my great grandfather's. The only reason I say that is they always lived in Orange, not Newark. As far as I know. Could be another family member....

Orange,NJ has a common border with Newark. So don't dismiss because of that. Have you found ship's manifests for all these people?

That is true. The 1930 & 1910 census lists a Carmine Freda in Newark (Newark Ward 15), but the children listed are not my great aunts & uncles. Unless my great grandfather had another wife named Carmela & more kids that we don't know about.
I haven't been able to find the manifests. I found the years that they came from Italy via the census data.

From what I know (& I would have to double check with my aunt), my great grandmother's family stayed in Italy. My great grandmother died in 1925 (from a sleeping sickness according to my aunt) & my great grandfather never remarried. My great grandmother & grandfather basically owned a street block in Orange with like 5 or 6 houses on it. My great grandfather never moved away from Orange & died there in 1952.
