In the year 1873 the 21 October on Wednesday at the hour of 12:00 in front me Rosario Flora official and mayor of vital records of the town of Pasiano has appeared Giuesppe Bagatin living the same town son of deceased Giovanni Bagatin and Rosalia Fan???

Sorry, Marty, but I have to make some corrections to what you typed above.

The date was Oct 29th at 10 a.m.

The town official's name was Riccardo Flora

Giuseppe was the son of deceased Giovanni Bagatin and deceased Teresa Populin

The record is a request for the couple's publications of marriage to be made. It is not the actual marriage record.

Neither the prospective groom nor the bride had ever before been married. Her father was deceased, but her mother was living.

Both prospective spouses were of a adult age.

Both presented copies of the extracts of their births as supporting documents.

This document gives their dates of birth as follows:

The groom's date of birth was March 16, 1847. His record was from the parish priest of Pasiano.

The bride was born on Nov 27, 1850. Her birth extract was from the parish priest of Motta di Siracusa (spelling ? )

Anyway, I think you will find this additional information useful to your search.

Peg

Hope this helps, Peg

and there is Serfino Populin son of Girolano and Angelo Campagina son of Petro
which I think are the witness to the record

Marty A
Serfino should be Serafino and his father's name should be Girolamo.

Angelo's last name was Campagna and not Campagina. His father was Pietro.

Both were witnesses, as Marty stated.
Thankyou both so very much.
It is possible that the Serafino Populin was the deceased Teresa Populin's brother and Girolano Populin was her father as well? or Serafino was Teresa's father and Girolano was her grandfather because Giuesppe was aprox 26 when they filed these papers and she was already deceased? I wonder what happened to his parents they must have been young when they died.

Normally witnesses produced for a marriage were produced by the prospective spouses, and known by them, so it is very possible that they were related to the bride. I don't believe their relationship to her though was stated in the record, but I will go back and check again. If the exact relationship is not stated in the record, then one can only conjecture as to how they were related.

the document just reads that they were "witnesses by the same chosen." -the same refers to the prospective spouses, so the bride and groom did choose the witnesses, as I expected, but their relationship to them is not stated in the record.

as far as the groom's parents-it is possible that he was the youngest of their children and that's why they were already deceased at the time of the marriage. Some of these Italian families were extremely large. I have ones that had some 14 children or more. With my husband's paternal grandmother, the situation was that her father's marriage to her mother was his third. So when she was born, her father was already 51 years older than her. Her parents continued to have another 5 children. Although they didn't survive-died at a few months or in their early years-by the time the last child was born, her father was already 60. So you just never know why the parents of the groom were already both deceased. If the groom had been underage-under 21-and both parents were deceased, as they were in this record, then there would have been a family council meeting before he could proceed with his marriage. The council-made up of relatives such as a grandfather, uncles, cousins, close family friends, would have convened to discuss the merits and shortcomings of the prospective bride, to determine if she had a sufficient dowry to bring to the marriage, and if she was of good moral character. If they decided yes to all of those, they would then, in the absence of the deceased parents, give their consent for him to marry her. This was not the case here though, as both the groom and the bride were of adult age.

I saw on the old family search.org website that there was a
MARTA GIOCONDA BAGATIN married to a SILVIO SPADOTTO on
18 SEP 1900 in Pasiano, Udine, Italy. I know you are in contact with someone who has the microfilm for the town on permanent loan. I would suggest you ask that person if they can locate this marriage record so that you can see the names of Marta's parents in case she is connected to your ancestry.

You probably should try to rent the microfilms yourself since there are only a few rolls to see if you can find the siblings for whom you are searching.

As to finding the brother in law who was in Canada and the name of his wife-it's possible he does not appear on Ellis Island, as he may have arrived through a different port. I don't have a subscription to ancestry.com and can't see passenger lists for other ports. I also don't see any info about him in the few online databases for Canada.
