FYI, i got the petition info last year but wanted to get the actual Cert from immigration. Ordered online in the beginning of July 2010. got the cert. Sat. (8 months)

Just info for people who are waiting.

I understand that USCIS is "understaffed and overwhelmed" - their justification for taking so long with these requests.

You know, I am pretty much "understaffed and overwhelmed" myself; would it be okay if I file my tax return a year or so late? Pay my water bill to my town's tax collector 6 months beyond the due date? Not show up for jury duty?

Carmine,

i would like not to pay for a bag on a flight or 75 cents for air/water at a gas station or having a tip can infront of you when you order a $4.00 cup of coffee.

Need to get back to a simple/family value life style that this great country has lost. But thats my opinion and another topic.

I ordered one on December 22 and received it last week - but that's because I called and complained. The copy they sent is almost unlegible and this was the best they could produce. So glad I didn't ask for the one with the red ribbon because it would have cost more.

Yeah, the tip cups are very interesting. In Italy, a good cup of coffee still costs one Euro, 1.10 for Cappuccino. Starbucks will never get into Italy.

Too bad they couldn't keep out McDonalds too.

A great Seinfeld episode with a tip jar. George is caught taking his tip out of the jar because the cashier didn't see him put the money in.

On our first trip to Italy, we had taken the late-morning train from Florence to Rome and were starving by the time we arrived. Walking out of Roma Termini we immediately looked for food and the first place we spotted was the McDonald's directly across the street.

I am ashamed to admit that our first meal in Rome was at that Mc Donald's.

There's one directly across the street from the Napoli terminal too. They sure know how to pick their spots. I'm equally embarrassed; we stopped in for a quick bite before catching our train to Roma.

Forgot to mention. While Starbucks expects tips on a $4.00 cup of not so good coffee, in Italy it's not unusual to get free biscotti with your one Euro cup of excellent coffee.

I've been on many Italian trains. Euro Star and Regional. Italians pack their own lunches before they go to the station. They wouldn't waste their euros on Mc Donalds. Hungry tourists who don't know where else to go eat at Mc Donalds.

Hmmm....to respectfully disagree

...there is a McD's in Aprilia on the SS148 (about 30 miles south of Rome). This is not an area frequented by tourists. (Tourists being foreigners who come to visit Italy.) Each time I passed this place on my way home from Rome, I noticed a full parking lot. And when I did stop to use the bathroom (and sometimes grab some fries

), it was usually so filled with people - mostly Italians - that the wait for food was aways 15 or 20 minutes. Lots of birthday parties going on, too.

Another McD's in the city that I lived as well - about an hour south of Rome. Took my son there once in awhile after his tennis matches. It was always filled with people too - mostly Italians. Oh, and one in the mall that was always filled with teenagers right after school let out.

There are a lot of people eating at these places in Italy, and it's not just hungry tourists who don't know where else to eat. THESE hungry people seem to know exactly where they want to eat.

Well... I'm guilty of eating Mc D's in Rome as well. I believe it was near the Piazza Di Spagna. My wife and I were curious so we went in. I was amazed to see how nice it was decorated and I will admit the Big Mac did not only look just like the picture, it was the best one I have ever had!
It was a tourist area so it was very crowded with tourists.

I've got to agree with kontessa on this one. McDonalds does not serve haute cuisine, but its popularity is undeniable. The one we frequented was full of Italians. Located next to the Napoli terminal, it was convenient for travelers, but I noticed many families eating there as well.

Tourists may drop in for a quick bite, but ultimately they want to savor the local cuisine. For Italians, it's McDonalds that offers something different, and the kids seem to love it.

My apology was really tongue in cheek. Sometimes you really need a shot of junk food.

BTW, just a bit past McDonalds is a bakery that serves sfogliatelle to die for.

There is a McCafÃ© near the train station in Florence which serves a very good cappucino - much better than here in the US "restaurants".

You don't expect to get great New England Clam Chowder in Italy, so it would be unreasonable to expect American restaurants to serve great Italian food or coffee.

In some of the larger cities like NY, however, you can get some really great Italian cuisine--costly though. Here in New Jersey, there is a little market/restaurant/taverna/bakery/gelateria called Villagio Italiano (a Calandra enterprise--they make great bread too). I love this "little bit of Italy" not too far from home. Their gelati, pastries, deli and coffee are as good as anything we've had in Italy--even the sfogliatelle.

It's more fun enjoying it in Italy, however. Got to start planning my next trip.

I am so jealous of all you for having been to italy that you can remember McD's. i wasted my opportunity when i was 21 in 1990. 3 weeks in europe and it was more fun to party then see everything else but chalk it up to age. can't wait to get back when i am done with my quest. plan on renewing my vows in the town my GF was born. just hope the euro is not that high and that theres no McD's in the town of my GF lol.
