Atti di Matrimonio - Translation Help Please

Post by Timmwill »

Just received this back in response to a letter I sent to Ogliastro Cilento. Thanks for the letter writing hints to get the entire document and not just the extract - it worked!

Would someone be kind enough to translate the entire document for me please. It was a big piece of paper so it's split into two images.

Basic info:
Groom: Giuseppe Lapolla
Bride: Maria Giovanna D'Agosto
Married: 1907

Thanks to everyone, you have all been so kind and helpful.

First Image...

The year 1907 day 20 of the month of January at 10:05 AM at the town hall of Ogliastro Cilento, open to the public.
Before me, Saverio Lembo, Mayor, personally appeared
1. Giuseppe (la) Polla, 22, peasant farmer, born in Eredita frazione, residing in Eredita frazione, son of Angelo, peasant farmer residing in Ef, and of Antonia Marzouli (sp?), peasant farmer, residing in Ef.
2. Maria Giovanna (d') Agosto, 21, peasant farmer, born in Ef, residing in Ef, daughter of Giovanni, peasant farmer, residing in Ef, and of Filomena Guida, peasant farmer, residing in Ef;
asking to be united in marriage.
To this effect they presented the document described below...
(then there is the legalize of the Civil Code, etc.)
I then asked of the groom is it is his intention to take as his wife the present Maria Giovanna d'Agosto; and to her if it is her intention to take for her husband here present Giuseppe la Polla.
The official then pronounced in the name of the law that they were united in marriage.
Present at this act were: Giovanni Veruaglia, son of deceased Giuseppe, age 29, peasant farmer; and Carmine Antonio Lagorga, 22, peasant farmer.

Second image...

Continuing...

...both living in this comune (witnesses)
The document presented is the certificate of publication executed in this town on Sundays 6 and 13 of the current month.
The marriage was given consent by the parents of the groom as appears in the act of publication.
I read the present act to all participants and they signed with me below except the bride who did not know how to write.

Signed...
groom, two witnesses and the official.

Thanks Tessa - I appreciate you doing the entire document! This will help immensely as it is our first real connection with the Lapolla side of the family.

Couple follow up questions:

1. What does frazione after Eridita mean?

2. We know them as Lapolla and D'Agosto. It was interesting to see the (la) for Polla and the (d') for Agosto written that way. This might be another topic for another forum but where these (la and d) added over time to mean something?

Thanks again, and to Livio for the mother's surname.

Eredita is a (frazione = hamlet) small village belonging to municipality of Ogliastro Cilento. It is about 1 mile north east of Ogliastro. See this map: http://goo.gl/maps/jkL4

About (la) Polla vs Lapolla, I believe that the official name was Polla, but they were known as Lapolla. The same for d'Agosto
