Working on Italian side of Family. Ancona ship 1910
Working on Italian side of Family. Ancona ship 1910
When my great grandparents came over to this country with my great-great grandparents they were uneducated, and Americanized their names. In fact when my grandfather decided to go to Italy in the 1970's he went to get his birth certificate in order to get a visa. He found no documentation existed. After asking his mother he went to the Catholic church for his baptism certificate. At that time he found that instead of James Riley Jr. he had been named Vincenzo Ranieri. His brothers and sisters went as well and found all the names had been Americanized and birth dates had been changed to the nearest holiday. Because of my grandfather I know that my great-grandmother was not Elizabeth Riley but Elisabetta Rannieri and was born April 21, 1892. She immigrated here on the Ancona to New York City in 1910, and I know a decade later she was living in Fruitville Utah. Her parents were named Pulli (I am guessing on the spelling) but changed it to Pulley. I know her father was Vincenzo Pulli. Her husband, my great grandfather was known as James Riley as that is what is listed as father on my grandfathers WWII draft notice, so I think his name may have been Giacomo Ranieri. So far I have only been able to find my great grandmother's records, and am stalled. Anyone who can give me an idea on which direction to go I would appreciate it. According to the ship records the place they came from is listed as Castellini, Italy. Following the Castellini it says ellause. I don't know what this means. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you point us to the actual ship's manifest in question?
There is no place in Italy with the spelling "Castellini"

Re: Working on Italian side of Family. Ancona ship 1910
I think your grand-father is from Castelli in the Region of Abruzzo, Province of Teramo. Ranieri is an Abruzzese name. I am personally acquainted with a Ranieri family in Abruzzo (they are probably your cousins) and there are Ranieri's whom I went to school with in Wilmington, Delaware. Try contacting the Comune di Castelli. The first name of the Sindaco (Mayor) is Ludvico. Castelli is way up on the Gran Sasso mountain. You can almost reach out and touch it from the front door of the Comune. As picturesque as you can imagine. My grand-parents are also from Castelli. I've been there many times.

Re: Working on Italian side of Family. Ancona ship 1910
Kelly, it sounds as if the Ranieri's you located on the ship manifest were from Castelli, Teramo but they are not YOUR Ranieri's, considering that the name is present in other regions of Italy. Also, Ancona is a port in the Region of Le Marche, which is not far from Castelli. Another clue that they arn't your relatives would be if the ship "Ancona" left from the port of Ancona because that port is too far away from Calabria. It's more likely your relatives left from Naples.
Re: Working on Italian side of Family. Ancona ship 1910
Also, it was more common for Italians south of Abruzzo to anglicize their names. In your case, one would not even know they came from Italy but more likely from Ireland. I also never heard of birthdates being changed to the nearest holiday.

Re: Working on Italian side of Family. Ancona ship 1910
I have read that many illiterate people (as most Italians - especially southern - were well into the 1900's) had no firm idea as to their true date of birth.
These are people who, after all, did not keep personal written records and had little reason to care about their actual date of birth; it was more than enough in 99% of cases to have a vague idea as to their age in years and little else mattered.
Upon arrival in the US they found almost immediately that everyone was asking for their date of birth. So, they chose a date that they could easily remember...

Hello!
I was searching for my family history and came across this post. This same Elizabeth Riley (Raneiri) that you are speaking of appears to be my great grandmother. Did you find any other information about them?
