This is the marriage record for my Grandparents Giuseppe Crispino and Angela Cillo- 29 March 1899. My question is, is this just recording the marriage at the civil office and they were married in a church, or were they married at the civil office? Is there any indication of a church marriage? Thanks, jerry

Re: Marriage Record- Civil marriage or church??
This is an official act of marriage.
There is no reference to a church marriage that I can see, only a reference at the bottom to the publication of the banns in Rotondi on the 5th and 12th of the current month of March.

Thanks T, although I am a little surprised they didn't get married in the church.

I think, but I'm not sure, that between 1870 and 1929, when the "Concordato" was signed between Italy and Vatican, people had to marry twice, one for State and one for Church. In fact, I found references to civil marriages with dates different from religious marriages.

Hi Jerry,

Sorry if I wasn't clear... there is no mention in the document of a church wedding, but that doesn't mean they didn't get married in a church at some time.
I have many records in my family that do not indicate a church marriage on the actual civil document... in other comunes you might find a column on the right or left that speaks of the church marriage.

As PippoM stated, "between 1870 and 1929, when the "Concordato" was signed between Italy and Vatican, people had to marry twice, one for State and one for Church."

Thanks T. I was hoping there was the name of a church in Cervinara since there are about 6 different churches there that they could have been married in. The bride was from Cervinara and the groom from Rotondi, the next little town over from Cervinara. Jerry

Just a thought...
Why not write to one of the churches (I find ONE in the Italian Phone Book)
http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... inara&ind=
and ask in which church the marriage might have take place for that year, and given the address of the bride... Can't hurt to inquire

Re: Marriage Record- Civil marriage or church??
Well, I wrote to all of them trying to get Angela's Baptismal info and never heard from any of them. However, I was successful in writing to the church in Rotondi and getting Giuseppe's Baptismal info. Jerry
