Minor Children ??

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Minor Children ??

Post by gottogetit »

I have a friend who was curious about the process of DC. He found out he did in fact qualify. He had a question though that may sound strange and a tried my best assure him that having DC is a good thing for his family. He wanted to know if he can leave out his minor children from the process so when they are adults his kids can decide if they want Citizenship or not. I said that I would ask the board for advice. I think he really wants his kids to make up their own mind.

Thanks

That's fair enough, but he really need not worry too much about it. If he registers his minor children--which, technically, he is obligated to do--it simplifies things for them when they are older.

If he fails to register this information, his children would have to apply for jure sanguinis recognition as adults. He probably would be unable to simply register them at that time; so it complicates things just a bit.

On the other hand, holding Italian citizenship is not an onerous burden. If, as adults, his children are uncomfortable with their Italian citizenship, they can renounce or, in reality, simply ignore it.
