What were occupations?

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

What were occupations?

Post by BMartino »

Just curious if anyone knows!
For example, my great grandfathers and great great grandfather during the mid to 1800's. Just wondering what their occupations might have been when they lived in a town or village (Petrulo, Calvi Risorta). I know I've come across possidente numerous times, but I am guessing that does not mean they were wealthy landowners, just that they may have owned their own homes.
I wonder if there is any way to find this out? :)

Usually a "possidente" is a wealthy landowner and does not need to work for a living.

Thanks for your replies! :)
I wonder if the towns kept a directory for that? Would anyone know? It would be interesting to find out.
