In the area of Corleone a particularly dangerous Clan of the Mafia was formed, who had many followers. Some of the leading Mafia bosses were born here, the most famous being Salvatore Riina (also known as Toto Riina) and Bernardo Provenzano.
Many gangsters immigrated to America to continue their business. In the struggle for power in the town of Corleone after the 2nd World War II was committed to the 300 murderson behalf of the clan.
On 11 April 2006, Bernardo Provenzano, head of the Sicilian Mafia, was arrested after 40 years on the run near Corleone. The city then declared the 11th April for holiday village and named a street into Via 11 Aprile (April 11th streets).
