Sagona/Celino

Post by sagona1885 »

I'm looking for information on my grandparents both from Palermo,Alia. My grandfather Sando Celino imigrated in 1895 and my grandmother Gaetana Sagona imigrated in 1898 from Alia to New York, then to New Orleans and settled in Napoleonville, Louisiana. I would also like to know the name of the plantation in Napoleonville that housed them. Also I would like any information(records) I can get from Palermo,Alia on them as well as their parents.

Welcome to the Forum!
We'll be happy to see what we can do to help.
Do you have your family's US records? (census, military, immigration, vital records, etc)
Sometimes they can contain clues that can help with your research into Italian records.
These 3 records may help, if you haven't seen them already.

Hey vj! :-D

Using the date of birth you provided above on the Draft Reg. Card, I was able to locate a possible birth record for "Sando Celino" :-)

Name is actually SANTO CILINO

Record #283
Born in Alia, 26 December 1877 @ 2:15 AM
to
Antonino Cilino, 23, farmer; and to
Rosa Nocito, his legitimate wife

:D Hey T :D ,
Great record!
Cilino was transcribed on Santo's 1894 ship's manifest
And his parents' names match his first two children.
Wish I could find Santo Celino or Gaetana Sagona (& her family) in 1900.
They could be in New Orlean's, Jefferson Parish or according to the poster, Assumption Parish (Napoleanville), or ???

First son Anthony born 1903

Great T!
Not sure if she was traveling with her mother
The right side of the manifest was difficult to make out.
I assumed the brother-in-law's name was split on two lines
Sago...na Lorenzo
Pretty sure the surname was Taulli, but I can't see where either 'given' name was used for Santo & Gaetana's children...
I think, a 1900 census for the folks on the 1898 manifest would help

corrected per Livio & T's finds

http://imageshack.us/a/img843/6656/1898l.jpg

not mother, probably an aunt: Concetta Damiana Paulli (Taulli?) 33, abt 1865

Gaetana Sagena (Sagona) 13, abt 1886
Maria Calogera Sagena 9, abt 1889
Concetta Sagena 7, abt 1891
Elisabetta Sagena 10 mos, abt 1897

Still having no luck

Gaetana Sagona and her sisters were not traveling with their mother.
I have checked Maria Calogera birth act https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1022261478 and her parents are the same as Gaetana's: Antonino Sagona and Arcangela Miceli

Concetta Damiana Taulli is an aunt...
Edited to change Paulli into Taulli

Elisbatta was the daughter of Antonino Sagona and...
of his legitimate wife Damiana Concetta Taulli! https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1022261478
At this point I would say that Arcangela Micela died some time before 1897. Need to check Concetta's birth...

Livio & T,
Thank you so much for tying the family together.
Valarie

A summary of the 1898 manifest from your findings:

Antonino Sagona and his second wife Damiana Concetta Taulli traveled to the St Patrick Plantation in New Orleans on 12 Oct 1898 with 4 children:
Antonino Sagona and 1st wife Arcangela Miceli's 3 daughters Gaetana, Maria Calogera & Concetta
and Antonino Sagona and second wife Damiana Concetta Tuilli's daughter Elisbatta.
They were joining Antonino's brother Lorenzo Sagona.
