My Great Grandmothers name as stated on my Gramdmothers marriage lic is said to be, MAGALANA ALDOBELLA. I have not found any Aldobella living now or in the past in Italy, the USA or Ellis Island. Is this a Italian surname or was it misspelled ??? I have fround Altobelli , a few Altobello & no Altobella or Aldobella ... anyone know if this spelling is correct ??..thanks

The spelling is incorrect and should be any of the sunrames you mention including ALTOBELLO for which there are listings in Puglia and marche regions in 4 towns;3 in puglia and one in Marcheegion. Threre is no aldobello oraldobella. Peter

I must hastily take back my word since there are ALDOBELLO listings as well as ALDOBBELLA listings in the ellisisland,.org website so it can very well be a spelling involving ALD...(Aldobello-bella,belle,belli) and could also contain a doible B. Please accept my apologies for assuming tio quickly it was a spelling error. Do you happen to knwo the town of origin and this will certainly clarify the matter of ther last name??Peter

Thanks Peter, I will have to check out Ellis Island again I must of missed it. I think her husband was from Cheiti ( Monteodorisio,Torino di Sangro, Vasto ) area`s, so I looked the name up on mircoflim at LDS, all I could find were Altotobelli & Altobello, also the It. phone website you always tell everyone to use. I also looked it up in the Campobasso area or town of.

iI suspect that once you check on the family suirnamed in the LDS you get a definitive answer to the spelling problem since you will be able to determine who is your family easily. Bring alomng the book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by Lynn Nelson wehich is a good companion for the micrfoilms and also bring a magnifying glass to make out the handwriting since sometimes its obscured. Thanks, Peter & everyone else. HAVE went to LDS & looked at the mircoflim & have found NO Madalena, Maddalena etc with the last name of Aldobella, Altobella, Altobello etc. I have seen Madalena Altobelli at Ellis Island that arrived in 1900 @ age 60, I would think the one I`m looking for would have been born about 1850-5 as my grandfather ws born about 1873., ut she was traveling with a R Scardapane so it could be her , though a bit old . My Grand Fathers name was Giuseppe & not Raffale, though I dont know if he had any siblings or not..... thanks again everyone, I will check these things out
