Mispellings Etc. in Records

I have read in various places that the documents used to establish your qualification for Italian citizenship cannot have any mispellings, etc. My Grandfather's birth record says his name is Michele. His marriage license says Michael (although he signed it Michele) and his date of birth on his marriage license is four years later than his birth record. I thought I could use his Social Security application to help with the birth date because on there it is correct, but on his SS application his name is spelled Mickael. I am sure that others have run into these problems, can anyone give any advice on how to get over this hump.

This is quite common, or so they tell me. I would be more worried about the birthdate discrepancies than the Anglicization of the names. I am in the process myself and have the same problem with my grandfather's name. I e-mailed the consulate and from the reply they did not seem all that concerned. But I really do not know how it will all pan out.

What about a naturalization certificate? Do you have one? On the back of my grandfather's is listed the "legal name change." My problem is a little stranger, since he sort of invented his middle name into something completely different than the Italian birth certificate.

I would also be interested in hearing how others have dealt with this.

Thanks Toscana. After i posted the question I read the other posts in more detail and saw that there were quite a few folks with similar name problems. I too am more concerned about the birthdate. There is no naturalization certificate because my grandfather never became a US citizen. But as I said there is an application for a Social Security number that lists the correct birthdate as well as his death certificate and he did file an intent to apply for citizenship back in around 1941. I have not seen that so I do not know what is on it. I am going to request the contents of his file from INS, or whatever it is now called.
