Coppola/Sodano - Where to Start

Post by pacoppola »

I'm aware, from reading other posts, that this is a common surname in southern Italy. I have the following information, but do not know what to do with it nor where to go from here.
My paternal grandfather was Francesco Coppola, born at Pomigliano D'Arco near Naples 6/9/1877. His father was Nicolo Coppola, his mother Domenica (no surname).
He married Antonetta Sodano (I do not know when or where), emigrated, and arrived NY 5/23/1911 on a Hamburg-America line vessel.
Antonetta's parents were Carmella Coppola (yes, my grandparents were cousins) and Ferdinando Sodano. I have no birth date for her.
I'm not really seeking information on my relatives here in the U.S., but rather about my ancestors in Italy.

Dear pacocoppola,
if you contact Pomigliano d'Arco civil records office, you can ask to have a copy of your grandfather birth record, where you also may find the date of marriage

Ufficio Anagrafe
c/o Comune
Piazza Municipio 1
80038 Pomigliano d'Arco (NA)
ITALY

if you don't know italian, use this web site to write the request

I hope it helps, bye ricbru

mfjp and ricbru:
Thank you. I had no idea that my grandmother arrived in Boston, nor when. That's great information. And thank you for the address in pomigliano, and the letter form. I do not speak Italian - as is so often the case, it was lost in my generation. The website certainly will be most helpful.

I too had no idea that one of my own Greats arrived in Boston... so you could imagine my surprise...

Not only was there a manifest for Boston, but for Ellis Island... all for the same journey... and then from there... a train ride all the way to the west coast...

Good luck with your research!

Hi there,

Also wondering about Francesco's manifest as well...I ordered it from the Ellis Island foundation and paid alot of money for a photocopy of only the left side and couldn't read the writing as the ink was too light.

Do you know any other way I can acquire a copy of the manifest for Francesco Coppola, who arrived at New York 5/23/1911, on a Hamburg-America line vessel???

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Depending on your browser, you can copy it from the site. I was going to post a link for you, but I didn't see a Francesco Coppola arriving on 5-23-1911.

When you order copies from Ellis Island, you have to order both pages of the two page manifests if you want both copies.

You can also order a copy from the National Archives. You will get both sheets for about $17.00. Go to this website, scroll down the page, and order NATF form 81.

http://www.archives.gov/research_room/g ... cords.html

I have ordered several copies of manifests from the National Archives. Some are readable. Some are not. I believe they use the same microfilm that the Ellis Island website uses. They will send you the best copy available from the microfilm.

Also, of course, the Mormon LDS Family History Center nearest you can order the microfilm that contains this record. It will cost you $3.25 and they will keep it for you for 3 weeks. How good the copy you can get depends on the kind of printer available at the Family History Center nearest to you. These places are volunteer operations and vary greatly from city to city.

Just saw your message... luckily Donna replied... otherwise I may have not noticed...

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0103%2ETIF

First Name: Francesco
Last Name: Coppola
Ethnicity: Italy.
Last Place of Residence: U.S.
Date of Arrival: May 23, 1911
Age at Arrival:  34    Gender:  M    Marital Status:  M
Ship of Travel: Hamburg
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0006

Just wondering... you can't print this manifest from the Ellis web site? Both pages look like they are in pretty good shape...

If you paid good money for a copy that is too light... you should certainly ask for a reprint... why not!

Look forward to hearing from you...

Good find mfjp. I went and checked again and realized last night when I searched (I like Morse's site) I checked the box for Italian and thus it didn't show up. Thanks for correcting my error.

Hi Debbie, thanks for the encouragement, but I believe that "galc" provided all the info - to make this an easy find. I do prefer "Morse's" site too. I have written to him a few times thanking him for his website, or have written when there was a problem with his site. He has also replied to every email I have written to him. Just an amazing person and and amazing team. Have a great day Debbie, and am always picking up immigration tips from you...
