From Calabria but don't know which Comune.
I had access to the 1930 census but not too the 1910... I wonder if anybody can be of help with regards to origin of Nicholas Paduano and Mary Paduano. My father told me that they were from Calabria (I found a record of Maria Paduano on Ellis but I don't think this is her)..
Nicholas Paduano (this is my maternal great grandfather)
Born in 1879-81 in Italy. Migrated to NY in 1906 [Census 1930]
Mary Paduano (this is my maternal great grandmother)
Born in 1878-80 in Italy. Migrated to NY in 1909. [Census 1930] Not sure of her maiden name.
Nicholas and Mary's kids
Mary (this is my grandmother)
Born in 27 Jul 1916 in NY. Died in 18 Dec 1988 in NY [Census 1930]
Dominick
Used to be a Barber - not on census.
Josephine
Born in 1913-4 in NY [Census 1930]
Thomas
Born in 06 Mar 1910 in NY or ITALY. Died in WWII in 1944, war veteran [Census 1930 and SS death index]
Cosmo
Born on 06 Mar 1910 in NY or ITALY. Died on 02 Jul 1996 in NY. war veteran [Census 1930 and SS death index]

Could you post a link to the 1930 census so we can review it? What was their citizenship status on the census? AL, PA or NA?

I don't actually have a soft copy right with me, but I've got the printed version. It says AL for both Nicholas Paduano and Mary Paduano.VaDeb wrote:Could you post a link to the 1930 census so we can review it? What was their citizenship status on the census? AL, PA or NA?

Is them being AL (ALIEN) quite siginificant in my research? Don't know how to go forward...VaDeb wrote:1930 Census. Parents are still AL

It means he hasn't filed any papers toward the naturalization process. On your other post the gg grandfather was naturalized. His paperwork should contain his place of birth.

Ooooh, I see. All the American paperwork, though, seems to say only ITALY...VaDeb wrote:It means he hasn't filed any papers toward the naturalization process. On your other post the gg grandfather was naturalized. His paperwork should contain his place of birth.

I will definitely get my paternal gg grandparents' naturalization paperwork (I need to check that webiste archives.gov).

You might be trying to jump ahead to far. Do you have birth, death and marriage records for your grandparents? If you do their parents should be listed on at least one of the documents.

Do you know if Nicola Paduano ever went to OHio? There is one that arrived in 1905, age 25, crossed out and age 28 written in. Arrived in Boston.

I don't have any records (birth, death marriage) for my grandparents no. I thought I shouldn't spend too much money... it costs 22 dollars each... Do you think I should get all of them for each person?

I don't think so but I can check with my father - if he knows anything about it.VaDeb wrote:Do you know if Nicola Paduano ever went to OHio? There is one that arrived in 1905, age 25, crossed out and age 28 written in. Arrived in Boston.

But the age and time of arrival is correct on that record.. but maybe Nicholas Paduano is pretty common?

Genealogy is something that is done in reverse. You start with yourself, your parents, grandparents. Collect as much information as you can, but birth, death and marriage records are important. Starting with a 2g grandfather that you don't know alot about is difficult. YOu could end up researching the "wrong" person with the same name. Also you miss alot of family history. Perhaps you can get an obituary in place of the death record.I don't have any records (birth, death marriage) for my grandparents no.
