I am wondering if there is anyway to find Italian adoption records.
My ancestor Pietro was born in 1768 in either Macerata or Camerino.
He was adopted by Giuseppe Carlucci into a noble family, and thus Pietro married nobles, befriended the Principe Caetani, among other things. He gave his son the middle name "Varano" which is odd since that is actually the surname (da Varano) of the old Dukes of Camerino.
The way I see it there are 3 possibilities:
1 - is was a Carlucci by birth and adopted by an uncle, grandparent or something.
2 - he was illegitimate and because of his noble roots he could not be recognized by his natural family
3 - he was just a random orphan who happened to be adopted into a noble family.
SO, are there adoption records anywhere for the late 1700s? Or is this a dead end.

TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information
Re: adoption records
You would have to find the parish church records to verify his baptism record. What church did Giuseppe Carlucci use?

Re: adoption records
We haven't been able to find Giuseppe's baptismal record yet. We know Pietro's son was born in Macerata and that Pietro was married in Macerata, but so far thats all we have found.
But if we find the baptismal record, will it contain information about the adoption?

Re: adoption records
Adoption didn't require paper at that time. Still, some adoptions left traces.
In your case, I suggest you weight the implications of being part of a noble house. Nobles often left will(s). To be nomitated heir (full/partial) in Giuseppe's will, Pietro has to be a legal-child since it was not a natural-one, e.g. adoption must have taken place in the meantime.
So step1 is check if Giuseppe had a will and step2 is check if Pietro inherited via will. These enables the existance of adoption papers.
