help with birth certificate

Post by crow13b »

Hello all,

So, I received a copy of my ancestor's birth certificate from il comune di Faeto.
I just need some clarification.

I've attached a scan PDF file of the birth certificate.

First question- I've only known my ancestor by his name of Antonio Pavia. Here, his first given name is Fedele and his middle name is Antonio, right?
Second, I'm assuming his father was Nicola Pavia and his mother was Fedela Pappani, right?
Also, why does it say fu Fedele next to Nicola and fu Antonio next to Fedela? Were those name changes- "was Fedele" and "was Antonio?" What do those mean exactly?
Thanks for the help!

First, next time you request a document, request a "copia integrale" not an "estratto" - a photocopy of the original will give you better information than this like the ages and occupations of the parents at the time.

Your ancestor was Fedele Antonio Pavia. So yes "first" name was Fedele, but Italian naming conventions don't go by first - middle - last, they go by given name(s) and family name.

His father was Nicola Pavia, son of Fedele Pavia. Fu means Fedele was dead at the time of the birth of Fedele Antonio (di would mean he was alive at the time of the record).

The mother was Fedela Pappani, daughter of Antonio who was dead at the time of the birth of Fedele Antonio.

So basically the child was named after his two dead grandfathers.
TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information

Thank you so much for telling me what that meant. I'm going to write back and ask for a copia integrale. I'm grateful I got an estratto but that would have been better. Thanks!
