I submitted a request to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services on the Freedom of Information Act form in regards to my Grandfahters citizenship status. I have been trying to locate naturalization documents for him. There were no records at the local courthouse. I received back a labor card that states he was still on immigrant status in 1930, however the birthday is not correct I also have a record of the 1930 Census that shows him as an ailen. Will this be sufficient information to prove that he was not a citizen when my mother was born? She was born in 1918. Also, will the birthdate difference (which is about a year difference) be something that I will run into trouble with. I have waited 9 months to get this information. Any help would be appreciated. I am applying for Dual Citizenship.

Ah, the dual citizenship thing!

I am QUITE familiar with this.

You will need:

1. A statement of "NO RECORDS" from the National Archives. Request a full research under your ancestor's name and nicknames, and possible dates of birth which may have been declared.
2. A survey report from a census dated after the date of birth of your ancestor's child.

As proof of it, and it's still up to their discretion on it.

Remember, most people at Italian Consulates don't want to do the thing in the first place, so you'd better sweet talk them.

Do you have any other Italian Ancestors which might have become Citizens?

I originally was going to go through one of mine who did not (who even avoided census records, to top), but I found a different branch that did, which made it a notch easier.

Mind you, I had 120 pages of documents (including translations) before I was even set through on the approval process, so it's not THAT easy, per se.

And, i've been waiting 5 1/2 months since then for them to process, since then.

Hi There,

I was waiting to hear from a friend who applied for Dual Citizenship. Here is a list of the documents he needed.

It seems the document that you have from NARA should suffice; however, you are going to have to prove the actual birth date of your grandfather.

All documents from the USA need to an Apostille Seal. An Apostille is the authentication of a public official’s signature and once the signature is verified an Apostille is placed on the document verifying that the signature has been authenticated.

The applications, Comune declarations, and declaration of applicant and ascendants that were provided by an Internet sight (free of charge) were not needed. She filled out the applications that the Philadelphia Consulate uses, we signed and submitted them. The documents will be translated into Italian by the Consulate staff, although most offices require that you provided translations, Philadelphia does not, and sent to the birthplace of the person you are claiming citizenship through, for registration.

We were given our file numbers and informed that all our documents were in order, properly notarized and Apostille and would be approved by the Consulate. We’ll be notified when the documents are sent to the Comune, which should take a couple of weeks, and well be notified again when all the entries are completed in the Comune, which may take months. She suggested that after the second notification we apply for our Italian passports.
