Chieti/Ortona Italy Records for Cardarelli

Has anyone had luck finding any records from Chieti or Ortona Italy?
It seems to be the only side of my family I am totally stuck on.
I've tried to contact the municipalities to no avail.
The names i'm looking for are Tomasso Cardarelli, his wife Maria and children Alberto, and John, both born in the 1880s.
I'm finding a lot of Cardarelli's in L'Aquila, but i think that's too far west of where I should be looking.
Has anyone ever been to that region, is it accessible by train? Thanks.

the birthplace could be also Ortona dei Marsi ( in L'Aquila province)... just a suggestion,
