Question about names

Post by stokkster1 »

Is the name Giacomo the same as Jacobo? In one record I found clearly the name Giacomo, and in another it says Jacobo so wondering if I have the right person, both mothers are Anna.

Jacobi/Jacobum is the Latin form of Giacomo. (The same noun will have different endings in Latin depending on how the word grammatically functions in the sentence.) This became Jacob in English. You've probably noticed that a number of names have Latin forms that are closer to English than Italian.

While in the past Jacobo and Giacomo nowadays they are considered two different names, you may have two brothers, one named Jacobo (or Jacopo) and the other Giacomo.

In English Giacomo also translates to James.
