Thank you, Angela! I have sent you a PM also and will answer your recent post here, thank you for the newspaper clipping (book) which I have and also the Run Down At Last newspaper clipping, which I also have. I have other newspaper clippings if you are interested in seeing them; they are pretty much the same. I also have Giuseppa Ciampi's death record, (my grandmother) and as far as an immigration record for Nunziante, I have been unable to find one.
I am attaching a "No Record of Registration" from City Archives, Philadelphia, PA.
Grazie,

Dolores

This is a great suggestion, Angela, and I will write Frigento at some point today. I've pretty much given up hope as to if/where Nunziante Ciampi is buried but this may give me some additional clues as to what happened in this whole tragedy. I imagine it will take some time for Frigento to answer my letter but nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Thank you, thank you!

Hi - I have been lurking for a while on this wonderful board, but I have never been able to add anything useful to the conversation until now. But this might actually answer some questions about the fate of your ancestor's remains, although it is EXTREMELY graphic.

The Chester Times, October 29, 1884 - Page 3, Column 3:

A MYSTERY STILL

The mystery surrounding the death of the Italian laborer found in the gully on Mr. Peota's [??? - not sure the name is correct - the print is very difficult to read] farm in Upper Chichester, still remains unsolved. That his death blow was given by the club found at his side there can be no doubt, but who gave the fatal hit is the question no one can answer, as no person has been found, other than the murderer, who saw the deed done. After the autopsy was finished by the physicians at the coroner's office the head, which contains all the wounds received, was severed from the trunk and photographed, while the body was handed over to one of the medical societies of Philadelphia. A photograph of the head is in possession of Chief of Police Williamson, while the head itself will be preserved to be used in evidence if necessary. It is thought that further developments will be forthcoming in a short time. Another effort is to be made to get information from the Italian railroad laborers, who thus far have evinced the greatest indifference in the matter, either not caring whether the man was alive or dead, or else hiding what they know of the case for fear of complicity in the tragedy.

Marriage Bann No 30: Nicola Montecalvo and Angiolina Ciampi
Frigento: 29 December 1895, 8.35 am
Prospective Groom: Nicola Montecalvo, 23, contadino, living Frigento, son of the late Marciano, contadino, residing in life in Frigento, and son of Carmina Ciriello, contadina, residing Frigento

Prospective Bride: Angiolina Ciampi, 16, contadina, residing Frigento, daughter of the late Nunziante, contadino, residing in life in Frigento, and daughter of Maria Rosaria D'Agostino, residing Frigento.

who have asked me to make publications for their marriage in this office, which they intend to celebrate, (ie Nicola Montecalvo and Angiolina Ciampi); and they have declared to me that the groom was born in Frigento and the bride was born in Frigento and that they have both lived in this town of Frigento for one year to today. They do not have an adoptive father nor an adoptive mother, nor are there any other impediments of relationship or affinity preventing their marriage, nor any other legal impediment.

Witnesses:
Alfonso Pelosi, 36, and Donato di Rienzo, 44, both landowners, both living in Frigento.

I examined the documents presented to me, (gave my approval?), and inserted them in the volume of annexed records to this register, declaring that the publication would be made in Frigento.

The documents are: the copy of the birth certificates of the bride and groom, issued by the Office of the Vital Records, dated yesterday 28 December, 1895, a copy of the act of death of the father of the groom (issued) from this same Office of Civil Records on 28 December, as well as the affidavit of this (District Court?) to the effect that Ciampi Nunziante died in the Americas.

Also appearing are the mothers of the bride and groom which give their consent required for contracting the marriage. They did not sign, however, because they were illiterate.

Banns were posted on 5 January 1896, 12 January 1896, and 16 January 1896.

Dolores, the writing in the margin under the dates that the banns were posted, is the closing of the register, so doesn't apply to this record. The above isn't exactly verbatim – I tried to make it so that it would read well but I think it is a little clumsy in places. I'm going to be out now for the rest of the day so I'm sure that someone else will help if I've not explained so well or missed anything out in my editing.

The other two places I thought you might like to contact are Delaware Archives. There is a form that you can fill in on line. Also, how about getting in touch with the Delaware Genealogical Society. You never know, there just might be someone there who has a particular bent for such cases and would be interested in doing some digging for you. A story like this is sure to have been itemised somewhere.

Look forward to hearing good news. Will be in touch.

Thank you for that, Angela.

I am 99% sure that I have contacted Delaware Archives and Delaware Genealogical Society without any success, but to be sure I need to go through emails, etc. and I will do that shortly.

Have a good rest of the day! You have been a great help.

Dolores :)

You are very welcome, Dolores. It was an interesting break from my own records which are a little exasperating at the moment. Some of my earlier records don't always give as much info and often they have errors in them.

The other place I thought of was the Delaware Historical Society if there is one and of course the cemetery there. I'm guessing and this a BIG GUESS that he was probably buried locally and may only have a little cross on the grave, if that. I remember helping a friend find her uncle's grave. Basically we had to go to the local Town Hall, look up the records, get a map and go look for it. He died early 1900s. There was nothing there, the wooden cross or whatever had probably been damaged over time. We could estimate though where is plot was. Maybe it's time to go take a little break and visit Delaware, Dolores! :)

sgb10, thank you. I have seen this article before but apparently did not save it. :(

It indicates to me that there were no remains to be buried. I do wonder, however, in those times, did they contact Italy and the family to get permission?

You've obviously done a sterling job at following up on this story Dolores. I've just read the very enlightening article that Sgb10 has posted (thank you SGB10, well done). (I hadn't noticed it before, it was obviously posted later in the day after I had posted?) It is such a horrific story, I'm feeling quite ill. I would have to agree, that from reading the article, there is no resting place to be found here for Nunziante. :( :( :(

Good question. I wouldn't know. Maybe someone else might know this.

The following is a draft copy which I would like to send to Comune di Frigento.
I used google translate and if someone could look it over and see what I have missed or should add, etc. that would be great!

rispettosamente,
Grazie,

Dolores
