I need information on vineyards and owners near Salerno since that's where my Grandfather was born. He was born in 1893 in Salerno. His mothers family owned the vineyard and we know nothing about them, except they had a daughter that got pregnant to one of the workers a Cataldo. The baby was born and she gave him up or away to an orphanage or church. Not quite sure on that part yet, but this was around July 29 1993. Still doing research on those questions but looking to locate vineyards near there. Hope there weren't too many so it can be narrowed down. Any help out there would be appreciated !!
Making progress slowly
Thanks in advance, Sharon Cataldo
This could be a difficult task. As you may know, even then Salerno was a very large industrial town (known as 'the Manchester of the Two Sicilies'). The comune of Salerno includes a lot of surrounding countryside. I'd say your best bet is to consult (or hire someone to consult) the Archivio di Stato di Salerno, which should have property records from that time.
Luckily, it sounds like it should have been a relatively large vineyard, since it was big enough to have hired labourers. That should help you narrow it down, hopefully!
I don't think that link will help. In looking up land owners you need to know the name. I don't know the name to look up a land owner. That is the million dollar question. Who was Grandpa's mother???? Isn't there something or somewhere to look up working vineyards near Salerno?? They must have harvested the grapes for someone local to process. What did you do back then once you had the vineyards picked? Was there a Name for this vineyard. For his mother to have to give him up after he was born, the family must have been well known that it would of brought shame if she would of kept him. Obviously she could afford to keep him if her parents had a vineyard. They weren't poor. Any thoughts anyone??
