Re: profession listed in 1841 death record
scardalano- wool-carder
The following is a variant spelling of the occupation, but still the same one.
Cartolano or Wool Carder
The cartolano, or wool carder, was involved in the process of separating and preparing the wool fibers (or cotton) for spinning. In the days before the existence of machines, this kind of work was done by hand and, therefore, involved a great deal of skill and practice. The carder would take two carding combs, which had upright teeth, and load one with the wool fibers. Using a back and forth motion, he then would place one carder on top, and then "combed" the carder through the wool on the lower carding comb. When all the carding wool had been transferred from the bottom carder to the top one, the carding combs would be flipped over, and the process would be reversed. When the wool was light and airy, the fibers easily separated themselves and were free from tangles. The mass was then formed into a roll of fiber, which could then be used on a spinning wheel.

Erudita,
Thank you. One of the lists that I use for researching Italian occupations: "Italian Occupations A-Z and the English Equivalents" (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... ngocc.html) only has "Scardassiere" for wool carder.
I am just about finished the research of the Gambatesa vital records and will continue my research of another relative who was born in Milano, Perugia, Umbria, Italy in 1873. However, I cannot find any microfilms for this town. I also researched www. antenati.san, no luck ---any suggestions.
