Question About Agostino(not Agostina) La Duca

Post by Belsitoj »

I have a question for you. My grandmother is Agostina La Duca. I found the record in the attached link. It is for AugustinO La Duca that died when he was 1 year old(I mane to O capital for distinction). It lists the mother as Rosa Volpe. My records show that my grandmother's mother was Maria Rosa Volpe. Do you think Rosa and Maria Rosa could be the same person and AugustinO is my grandmother's brother that died when he was one? Also if you would not mind translating the pertinent information on the record I would appreciate it (if you think it is her brother).
Thanks
Joe

I was trying to find Agostino's birth to better check but could not find it.
On the other hand I found something very interesting:

Your grandmother was Agostina Duca (not La Duca), born May 19 1883 in Caltanissetta, daughter of Salvatore Duca, sulfur miner, aged 30 and Rosa Volpe, seamstress. The birth record (http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0) has an annotation stating that on 7 September 1900 she married Vincenzo Belsito.

The marriage record is here: http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 5.jpg.html
Sept 7 1900
Groom: Vincenzo Belsito 24yo born and residing in Caltanissetta, son of deceased Pietro and Mariantonia Ferrauto
Bride: Agostina Duca, aged 17, born and living in Caltanissetta, daughter of Salvatore and Rosa Volpe.

While looking for a birth act for the deceased Agostino... I located this birth act for Agostina Duca, born May 1883.
Father: Salvatore Duca, 30, sulfur miner.
Mother: Rosa Volpe.
Married with Vincenzo Belsito, 7 September 1900

Wow I am really confused now. I believe her birth record is at this link but has a different date.
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

I believe this also syncs with hard copy of a birth certificate (don't remember where I got it from)?? The date on it shows April 3, 1885 with the name La Duca. The marriage to Vincenzo you mentioned above is correct. Not sure what to make of this.

It is very simple: the Agostina La Duca born April 3 1885 is NOT the person who married Vincenzo Belsito on Sep 7 1900. You g-grandfather married Agostina Duca born May 19 1883.

lol, now that I am looking at it that makes sense, she would have been 5 years old. I'll have to really look at this.

Thanks

Me again. I think after reading the attached you will see why I was so confused. I found information supporting both names, La Duca and Duca. Below are the links you guys helped me with so you can see the differences in one place. I also attached two documents that I received from my cousins supporting the La Duca side. Very strange how the parents first names are so close and the last names are exact. There are also a lot of links on Familysearch that have my uncles listed with La Duca as the mother(I attached 1 of them). Only thing I can think of is the name was Duca in Italy but when they came to the US somehow it got changed to La Duca (but that does not explain why the documents my cousins gave me show La Duca. Don’t think there is any more you can do, I have to try and figure out which name it really is. Thanks again for all your help.

Re: Question About Agostino(not Agostina) La Duca

Here are my thoughts... for what it is worth :-)

I believe that a daughter, Agostina, was born in 1883 - recorded with surname Duca.
I think that the death act you posted originally is actually for THIS Agostina, even though it reads AgostinO on the record. In the index, for record #302, it reads AgostinA...
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

THEN in 1885, was born another Agostina, with the surname recorded as La Duca. When she was married in 1900, the clerk recorded the annotation of marriage on the incorrect birth act. And used the surname DUCA from that birth record.

I realize that the publication of banns records Agostina's age as 17, and that the age of Agostina born in 1885 would have been 15. However, we do not know if the banns were filled out based on the birth act/extract that was produced for the marriage which would have been the wrong record, since that is where the annotation is written.

Here is the marriage act of Salvatore La Duca and Maria Rosa Volpe
#36
Dated 25 February 1882 in Caltanissetta
Salvatore La Duca was single, 28, a sulfur miner born in Caltanissetta and residing there.
He was the son of Calogero and of Maria Rosa Giunta, both residing in Caltanissetta.
Maria Rosa was a widow, 26, a seamstress born in Riesi and residing in Caltanissetta.
She was the daughter of deceased Gaetano and of [living] Pietra Maurici, residing in Riesi.
Banns were published on the 12th and 19th of February.

It is definitely a puzzle. I do not believe that there was an AgostinO born to the couple. I searched from 1882 through 1884 and did not find him.

Today in Province of Caltanissetta you will find surnames: Lo Duca, Duca, La Duca.
But in Comune of Caltanissetta - only Lo Duca :-)

Thanks Tessa, and your opinion means A LOT to me!!!! :D This is definitely a puzzle!!!!!! So if I am understanding you correctly, you think the Agostina(La Duca) born in 1885 with the following link is probably my grandmother.
