Hi there,
Does anybody have any good sources for Ukraine genealogy?
I have an ancestor that was a German engineer...imported to Russia during Stalin's 5 year plan that began in 1928 (developing big public works). Specifically looking at Zaporizhia area- he helped build the Dneiper River Dam.
If someone has the time and inclination out there here are a few details:
Johann Stephan (pronounced schtepp-an) is the name I have to go on. Father and son *I believe* have the same name. Originally from the Dresden area of Germany. Son was born in 1924, Father I am guessing around 1895... so both born in Dresden area of Germany. Son was a prisoner of war during WWII- so he must have been enlisted with the Red Army?
It's not a whole heck of a lot.
I know that familysearch.org has some documents but I haven't been able to get down to a reading room and it won't allow me to look at them remotely.
Thanks for any pointers/help/etc

Keira,
I have German ancestors from Poland and I found this website called SGGEE (The Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe). It has many records for Germany, Poland, Russia Ukraine etc, it also has villages, maps database links I could go on and on. Check it out. Here is the link:
