The attached birth record is for my paternal great uncle. In the text, I see his name as Antonio Michele LAVORGNA, but the name in the marginal notes seems to have some extra characters or a short name after the name Antonio. I'd appreciate someone taking a look at this. Other than that, I had no problem translating this record. Thank you.

After the name Antonio in the margin is dico Michele. The name Michele written in the body of the record is a mistake. Antonio is the correct name.

Erudita and OrangeBlossom, it is the other way round:erudita74 wrote:After the name Antonio in the margin is dico Michele. The name Michele written in the body of the record is a mistake. Antonio is the correct name.
"Antonio (underlined), dico, Michele" means that Antonio is incorrect and Michele is the name of the baby.
In any case, as a general rule, the correct name(s) is the one written in the body of the act.
Michele is the name also in the index: http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 8.jpg.html

Thank you, Erudita and Livio.
I seem to recall that in French the use of a word like DICO (DIT) could mean that the person was named ANTONIO, but called Michele. Is that possible?
Question: If one name is the correct one, and the other name is incorrect, why doesn't the official in Faicchio just totally cross out the incorrect name to avoid confusion?
The mixup with the names is very confusing to me, because my paternal grandmother had several brothers, one of whom I thought was named Antonio and another named Michele. When I found this record, I thought that there was just the one man, who happened to have two names. Looks like I'm wrong. I'll have to review the Nati files again. My first search didn't turn up birth records for all the siblings, who I know were born during that some time period. Need to give it another try. Thanks again for your help.

The rule/law in Italy is that one must see what was the incorrect word, some times it is underlined, in many cases you would see i surrounded by a box or even two slashes...
