Withdrawn Cert

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Withdrawn Cert

Post by JOHN08 »

To immigrate to America, did the person receive a certificate of health that he or she was in good health from the shipping company? I found a relative who immigrated in 1905 and was held for a special inquiry and was deported; the only notation was "withdrawn cert" for my relative who was deported along with his parents and siblings. Any idea what the "withdrawn cert" means.

I would guess that the problem was a contagious disease and the entire family was deported.

Appreciate any input.

I don't know about the certificate, but it was not unusual for immigrants to be denied entrance for health reasons. My grandfather sent back to Italy from Ellis Island because of an ear infection. He returned six years later and was admitted.
