Marriage Record- Calabrese and Russo

Post by PageAdams »

Greetings!

I am trying to locate a marriage record from Salerno Provence Italy (most likely the town of Bracigliano) between Giuseppina Calabrese and Ferdinando Russo. Giuseppina was born in Salerno in 1857 (died in 1936, Rome, New York.)

Any thoughts on name variations? Could Ferdinando be spelled a different way in Italian? Calabrise might be an alternative to Calabrese.

Thank you for your insight!

What makes you think that they were married in Bracigliano? Do you have evidence that Giuseppina Calabrese was born in Bracigliano? (Marriages usually took place in the hometown of the bride :-) )

I found a marriage record for their son, Giuseppe Russo, in 1914 in Oneida County, NY.
He states that he was born in "Barcelona"... There is a Barcellona Pozzo di Grotto, in Messina, Sicily.

EDIT TO ADD***

OK :-) I found a manifest from 1922 for Giuseppa Calabrese, age 66, leaving her sister Filomena in Bracigliano, and going to Utica, NY, to her son Giuseppe Russo.
According to the manifest she was a widow, and had never traveled to the USA before.

Name: Giuseppa Calabrese
Arrival Date: 1 Jul 1922
Birth Date: abt 1856
Birth Location: Italy
Birth Location Other: bracigliano
Age: 66
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Presidente Wilson

Records are not available online for Bracigliano
You can write directly to the comune (town) and request the marriage and birth act for Giuseppa Calabrese. This should give you more information about Ferdinando Russo...

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza L. Angrisani
84082 Bracigliano (SA)
ITALY

You should write your letter of request in Italian. INCLUDE your photo ID, an email address should they need to contact you, and do not send any money with the initial request.

Hi Tessa! Thank you! This is very helpful! She was born in Bracigliano and I'm sure she was married there to Ferdinando. I will have to reach out to their offices

I see a few different e-mails listed. Do you recommend which one would have birth/marriage records? I will write the note in Italian:

I would recommend a written letter, with an email follow-up.

However, if you are going to request via email, I would use this email address for the comune:

info@comune.bracigliano.sa.it

Hi Tessa,

I am going to write a letter to Bracigliano, but I would like to include some form of payment. I feel that this will help them with sending me official documents if they find them.

Should I get a certified check from my bank? I wonder who I should make it out to.

Thank you!

It is strongly suggested that you do not send $$$.

If payment is needed, they will usually contact you by email with instructions on how to pay.

Hi Marty - I don't have a date for the marriage, but I know it would be between 1868 – 1884. If the records are not digitized for me to sift through, how else would I be able to find the marriage record without reaching out to Bracigliano?

Hi Marty,

I already provided the Comune address and the necessary information for requesting a record in an earlier post above.
BUT... always pays to hear it twice! :-)
