Records available 1800 - 1820 Patty & Gioisea Merea, Messina, Sicily
Records available 1800 - 1820 Patty & Gioisea Merea, Messina, Sicily
Where can I obtain records from Gioisea Marea, Messina, Sicily for the years 1800 - 1815. Does anyone know if the LDS Family History Center have them. Are there micro film I can order from Salt Lake with these records. Ant help of ideas where to find these would be much appreciated.

There are earlier tax census records on microfilms that would have to be rented, but there are many films for these records, and they are very difficult to get through.

The only other option would be church records, but I don't see that any for this town are available on microfilm. You would have to write to local parishes there and, more than likely, send a hefty donation, if the priest or his clerks are even willing to do research for you.

The correct spelling is Gioiosa Marina not Gioisea marina

"Gioiosa Marea" is correct. And as Erudita notes, the Riveli are more difficult to use than the civil records.
The 1811 and 1815 records do not give a complete list of each household; rather, they only list the head of each landowning household.
The 1748 Riveli does list each household member, but linking a person in the 1748 Riveli to the 1811 Riveli is a challenge. Even if you have a reasonably good idea that you've identified a family member in the civil records who was likely to have been alive in 1748, you need to pay particular attention to the set of lands owned between 1748 and 1811 -- i.e., location(s) and neighbors -- to bridge the gap.
That said, if the Riveli are ever brought back online (they were briefly available online at FHC's last year), they can provide some useful insights into a family.
As for church records... last June I contacted two genealogists in the general area (Sicily) regarding quotes for research into my Gioiosa Marea ancestors. So far neither has been able to provide one; I suspect the local parishes have not been entirely cooperative in even telling them what records might be available.
