Deciphering Atti di Nascati
Deciphering Atti di Nascati
I am new to this forum and am looking for help deciphering the script in an Italian birth record.
I have managed to translate just about all of the attached file, apart from a few lines. I just can't make out the letters of the handwriting on a handful of lines. I apologize for the poor quality of the images, but they are the best that I have.
On the first page, I cannot decipher the last 4 words of the line of handwriting that starts with "anni trentaquattro sua mogli"
On the second page, I cannot decipher the final four lines of handwriting. (These lines start with "Lette il...")
I know that these lines are only the affirmation and signatures of the records official and witnesses, but if someone was able to transcribe them for me, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you for the help!

Hi Bacci
Welcome to the forum!
Page 1:
"sua moglie, contadina, secolui (seco lui) convivente" ie "his wife, peasant farmer, living with him."
Page 2:
Not so clear, but I read:
"Letto il presente atto agl' intervenuti si sono meca sottoscritti i soli testimoni, avendo il asserito il dichiarante di essere illetterato."
It's basically saying that the act was read and that only the witnesses have signed the record, because it was asserted that the declarant was illiterate. (There are are different ways of saying this and this is how it is written here.)

Thank you for the translation. That helps a bunch.
Re: Deciphering Atti di Nascati
Hello again.
I have been searching online for maps of Carovilli (the town of my great grandmother's birth), to find the street on which she was born. Her birth record indicates that she was born in 1878 at #10 via Sotto la Torre. I am unable to find any maps that currently show this street name.
My father and I will be visiting Carovilli in May and would really enjoy visiting the street, if it still exists.
My plan is to send an email to some town officials in Carovilli, and possibly Isernia, to see if anyone there can assist me. Would someone, please, mind translating the following to Italian so I can send it off in an email? Thank you so much.

Buongiorno,

Thank you mmogno. It's so quaint. I love the bells on the top, I wonder what happened to the rest of the belfry. Possibly the tower with the clock is original and the surrounding building added later??? Just my thinking.mmogno wrote: 01 Apr 2017, 01:05Torre Civica di CarovilliAngelaGrace56 wrote: 01 Apr 2017, 00:22 ... Thank you, all!
It is so nice that everyone is as excited about our upcoming trip as we are. The email translation is wonderful, and I hadn't seen the flickr stream of photots, so that was a really pleasant surprise.
I have also been corresponding with a very helpful gentleman from Carovilli who now lives in Toronto. Here is his response about Sotto la Torre:
Hi. Sotto la torre means literally: below the tower. Carovilli was founded around a monastery that was on top of a hill, it was called "the tower" The tower now is not there anymore but the hill is and therefore we still have an area called "top of the tower" and one " Below the tower" which is your area. The national road
"istonia" crosses through Carovilli, mostly around the hill: Coming from west, from the town of Roccasicura, this road enters Carovilli and runs north of town for about 500 meters, than turns 90 degree right, around the hill, and that is the area called "Sotto la Torre."
There isn't really that many houses in that area, therefore it shouldn't be too difficult to identify your family of origine and maybe to find some relatives of yours still living in town.
I will still send the email to officials in Carovilli to seek additional info, but it seems like the part of town I am looking for is circled in the attached file. (Note that the "national road" referred to above is shown in yellow on the map.)

Mmogno: you must have switched the link after I posted here. These photos are stunning. They certainly draw you in. I need to take a closer look at them. The belfry has 1802 written on it. I thought it may have been older than that. It's a shame the belfry is not there now.mmogno wrote: 01 Apr 2017, 01:05EDITAngelaGrace56 wrote: 01 Apr 2017, 00:22 ... Bacci: Wow a town of heritage buildings/monuments, at least three towers, deep blue skies, interesting cloud formations, incredible sunsets, beautiful flowers (love the purple ones), snow if you are there at the right time, bush, and so on.....you won't want to leave!
