Salvatore Pino

Post by Tanya »

I am trying to locate my family. My grandfather, Salvatore Antonio Mario Pino, was born in the early 1880s in Sardinia. Possible areas are Cagliari or Oristano. His first wife was Anna Maria Josephina (Maiden name: Congiu/Congia/Conju/Conja or some variation) and she was from either Italy or France. His parents names were possibly Piettro Pino and Guisuppina Annarita (both born about 1850). Spellings may be inaccurate on names.

Salvatore came to Nova Scotia, Canada by 1918; but there is almost no information that I can verify of him before then. I do not even have the port of entry or if he came through the United States or direct to Canada. The information that I have may not even be accurate. There was talk that he possibly shortened his last name. Again, I have no concrete information and am working on memory of older family members and records in Canada that are incomplete to say the least. The date of birth on his death certificate isn't even the same as what is on his headstone in the cemetery where he is buried. I would like to find some family to connect to. Please respond if you feel you might have information. No piece of information is insignificant.

You need to know the town of birth or marriage to get anywhere in Italian research.
Check out my website for tips on how to find the town of origin.
Check out www.familysearch.org to see if they have microfilms of the town you need. There are 48 persons in todays phone book in Sardegna.
Depending on where you got his wife's surname yuo should know that CONIUGI is the word for a married couple.

Santu Lissurgiu, Cagliari, Italy is listed as his birthplace. That is the most I could find about his birth.

He was said to have been married already when he came to Canada, but I'm not sure in what country or when that marriage took place.

Thank you for sharing that information and directing me to your website. I'm looking through the information and links you have to try to make this easier. I have been researching for over two years and also took a DNA test, but nothing has gotten me any additional information.

Some records for Santu Lussurgiu are online at the following link. I've just begun checking and have seen the surname Congiu and Pinna in records. Still checking for the Pino surname.

Santu Lissurgiu is a town in Oristano.
Family search has records here:
https://familysearch.org/search/image/i ... %3D1947719

I have located ONE Salvatore Antonio... whose surname is Pinna... born in 1888
Parents names, however, do not match those you posted.

I also found a Salvatore Maria... surname PINO... born in 1881
He was born on 11 December to unnamed parents and given the name Salvatore Maria Pino

The PINO Record
#162 on the right

The PINNA record
#11 on the bottom left

Hi Biff! I didn't see your post. Sorry for the duplicate link to Santu Lissurgiu records :-)

HI, T.

Great finds on the two possible matches for the poster's grandfather.

I've been checking for a marriage of a Pino/Pinna to a Anna Maria Giuseppa Congiu but no luck thus far. Records are at times somewhat jumbled.

I agree. I also searched the marriage records and only found a Salvatore Pinna marrying Antonia Angela Maria Caratzu... in 1896.

Do we know if Salvatore married in Italy before immigrating?

Also, I found one or two other PINO listings in the births, and in each case the child was given that surname by the official.

I am unsure if they married in Italy, but we all believe they did. Her date of birth was November 5, 1896.

Also, the Salvatore Pino with the date of birth December 11, 1881 sounds like the match because of the similar birthday we have. How do I research further information to find his parents names? I am not certain the names I have are accurate at all.

Would someone kindly translate that document listed at 162 for Salvatore Pino in the above posted link? I don't read or speak any Italian unfortunately.

On 13 Dec 1881 at 11:00 Am in the town hall of Santu Lussurgiu appeared Angela Mannone, 60, a midwife living in this town who declared that at 3:30 AM on the 11th of the current month in a house at Via Montiferro, number 31. from a woman who does not wish to be named was born a male child given the name Salvatore Maria Pino.

No marriage information in the margin.

Thank you, Biff. That was interesting that nobody wanted to claim this child. Maybe there are church records of baptism that would state the parents names? Or have I come to another dead end?

Tanya,

It's unlikely that his parents' names would be on his baptism record. Sometimes, at a later date one or both parents might come forward to claim the child but this is usually noted on the birth and/or marriage record. I was looking for marriage information in the margin under the birth act and his name but there is none. In looking for Anna Maria Giusepp(in)a in the birth records I did not find any for that name from 1888 through 1900. There is a chance that she might have been from a neighboring village.

Biff,

Is this something that is common with nobody claiming the child in a birth record? I hadn't heard of that in any of the research I had done until now. What does that usually mean when parents aren't on the birth record? Was he an orphan? Was he illigitimate? I have so many more questions now.

You may find this article interesting. It gives insight into births outside of Marriage...

Tanya,

My great grandmother was Carmela Esposito who was also a foundling. She was never claimed by her natural parents (I have copies of her marriage act from the comune which showed her parents as unknown) but I was able to determine that she was raised by a Cicco family. On my grandfather's and his brothers' death certificates in the states the mother's surname is Chick or Cicco.

Tanya,

I noticed on your tree on Ancestry that you have your grandmother's town as San Vito in Calabria. I believe that the town is correct but that the province is Cagliari in Sardinia. That might explain why there was no record of her birth or marriage in Santu Lussurgiu. Birth and Marriage records for San Vito are online.
