My great grandfather was born at sea on a voyage from Italy to India. His parents were believed to be from Milano however we dont know when they were born or where they were in Italy they were born. If he is born at sea to two italian citizens does this make my great grandfather an Italian citizen or possibly and Indian Citizen.
I am applying to get his birth certificate through the consulate however the only thing stopping me is that he wasn't born in italy or any of italy's provinces to send it to the correct Comuni. And they still get his birth certificate or italian citizenship certificate if he was born at sea. Also how would i apply for his parents certificates if i dont know where they were born or exactly what date i know roughly the years they could have been born and i know their names and they lived in Milano and his father was a conductor and lecturer of music at a milano university.
If he was an Italian citizen does this mean i can apply to be a citizen? His daughter (my grandmother) was born in the UK and i am unsure if she was an italian citizen passed down from her father or if she just had a British citizenship or both italian and british or renounced it all to be an Australian citizen. Her son (my father) is only an Australian citizen and so am i.
Thanks for any help
Birth at sea italian citizen? Applying for Birth certificates unknown birthdate
Re: Birth at sea italian citizen? Applying for Birth certificates unknown birthdate
Yes, if his parents were Italian citizens, your ggf was also an Italian citizen. I don't know how such birth certificates are obtained, but perhaps someone else on this site can help.
However, to determine if you are qualified for citizenship through this line, you need to know, not only birth dates, but naturalization dates if applicable. Remember that citizenship was lost by naturalization before 1992, and children naturalized with their parents if they were minors. So you have much research to do.
Since your ggf was an infant, your research needs to begin with his parents. You may be able to locate their comuni through the ship manifests, so that may be a starting point.
