mmogno: Thank you. I did see the "q" there and thought that the official had made an error and then written "tre" above the line. I also forgot to change the month from June to January. Thank you for the back up.mmogno wrote: 03 Jul 2017, 00:50AngelaGrace56 wrote: 02 Jul 2017, 23:59 Birth Act Number 5

I've been trying to interpret a military record I have and am stuck in places. If you have time, I would appreciate you looking at it. You are much better at reading them than me. I'll post it shortly but I know it's getting late, so anytime is okay.

Re: Help with birth records
Thank you Angela and mmogno,
I found some more children birth and death records where the information is consistent but one child has me confused.
Birth Act No 3
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 3.jpg.html
Born 9 January 1838?
Child’s name Maria Giovanna Battista?
What is the word before wife? It does not appear to me legittimo.
Death No 24
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0
Death on 23 May 1838?
What is written after the child’s name?
Where was Polissena living?
Thank you again,
Karen

Re: Help with birth records
Happy to help.
I thought you might be interested in the following pdf, if you haven't already seen it: https://cfhg.byu.edu/Downloads/Italian_ ... efault.htm
(I found it really helpful when I first started reading Italian records, downloaded it, printed it out and placed the copies into a “huge” clear file which I still have on my book shelf. Ofcourse, deciphering the script is always the tricky side though.)

Re: Help with birth records
Angela,
I had taken several online courses offered by FamilySearch and others but many did not include handouts to save for future review. Since I could download this one it will make a great addition to my reference collection. Tessa78 recommended Lynn Nelson's book - Genealogists Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors: How to Find and Record Your Unique Heritage which I have found to be extremely useful.
Thank you,
Karen

Re: Help with birth records
Hi Angela,
I found the last of the births for this couple. There were seven children. Both of the Birth Acts below show the child was presented by their maternal grandmother so want to be extra careful getting the information regarding her correctly.
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0
Birth Act Number 126
Presented by Maria Rosa Puppo daughter of deceased ?, age ?, profession farmer
Female child named Maria Concetta Battista born at home on Strada Piazzolla on 26 December 1841
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0
Birth Act Number 99
Male child named Giovanni Battista born at home on Strada Piazzolla on December 18, 1842
Is there anything else on the documents regarding Maria Rosa that would be useful? Just curious, but do either document say why the children were not presented by their father?
Thank you once again,
Karen

Re: Help with birth records
No, the records don't say why the father didn't present the child. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I'll hook up my laptop to another monitor and have a closer look and get back to you if I notice anything else. I notice the word "puerpera" is used in both these records. It means "woman who has just given birth".
Birth Act Number 126: Maria Rosa Puppo's father was the deceased Orazio, and Maria Rosa was aged 50 (cinquanta).
Birth Act Number 99: Baby born at Strada Piazza on 1 (Primo) December 1842, at the time 6 pm (alle ore diciotto). I think that when you were looking at the date your eyes slipped to the time instead - so easy to do when you've spent ages looking at records.
Going great!!!
BTW: I'm really impressed that you did the Family Search online courses – good on you. I did make a little start on them, but I'm a much better reader than I am a listener. Glad you have Lynn Nelson's book, it is a really good book.
Here's a couple more links for you which you will also find useful, in case you don't have them:

Re: Help with birth records
Hi Karen and Angela
Although neither record states why the infants were not presented by their father, his occupation, bracciale, could be a clue. A bracciale, or day laborer, was not a contracted worker. On any given day, he had to go to the piazza in his village to see if his services were needed for the day. Sometimes, there was only work for one out of three men. So there was a bidding war. Even children as young as 8 were hired as day laborers and for less money. So it was not uncommon for a day laborer to have to seek work in another town or somewhere other than the village in which he lived. So, even though the records do not state that he was away when these children were born, the possibility exists that he was. Normally, if the father was around when his child was born, he wanted to make the declaration himself at the town hall. Not only was his doing so a sign of his virility but, it was also a statement to other villagers that he had, indeed, fathered the child, and that no other man in the village had.

Re: Help with birth records
You're very welcome, Karen.
In the first record, Rosa Puppo is said to be the mother of the woman who had given birth. The record also reads that she produced the witnesses (listed on the second page) and that they were not relatives in any degree.
In the second record, it again says that the witnesses were produced by the declarant and were not relatives in any degree.
