My paternal grandparents are from Torricella Peligna. They came to the United States in 1897. My father and his sister, both born in the USA had an Italian word for little delicacies, appetizers or desserts. Phonetically the word sounds like "gordanizzi". The closest I have been able to get to this word in my Italian dictionary and online is "ghiottoneria" (delicacy, tidbit).
Does anyone know of this word?
Abbruzzese dialect word for sweets, little delicacies
Re: Abbruzzese dialect word for sweets, little delicacies
Oh, yes, I am no far from Torricella, and the dialect is very similar, the word in dialect is: "ingurdunizie" that can be italianized in ingordaggini or so, but really "ghiottonerie" is the true right italian word...
but, the dialectal word is more precise, because really the "ingurdunizie" means tidbit prepared by the cook primarily for himself and for others. The dialect word comes from the Italian word "ingordo"=gourmand, so a gourmand prepare the "ingurdunizie" primarily for himself, because he is a gourmand, and then obviously also for others ...
the ingurdunizie are those delicious dishes that a cook knows as true good dishes, because he has prepared them for his taste and for himself mainly... Then by extension of meaning the ingurdunizie mean the delicacy, but the true meaning of ingurdunizie word is always associated with the chef's chef who prepares a tidbit mostly for himself, second his taste, and shares with other family members .. so they are treasures of cuisine, delicacies, specialties, tasty bouquets...
