Help with Latin, please.

Post by lmaulhardt »

Hi--I'm trying to help a relative translate this Latin baptismal record (see attached image). It seems to have been signed/written in 1931 but is referencing a baptism that happened in 1909. OR it is saying that the person was born in 1909 but not baptised til 1931, OR that the baby referred to here changed his name to "Joseph" in 1931 (which actually happened--after being born "Giuseppe").

I can tell that the first paragraph is describing where this record is being entered in an official baptismal ledger or is referring to something in another baptismal record.

Then I can tell that the next paragraph starts by indicating that on the 9th of January in the year 1909, a certain official priest of Fontenchiari baptised a child who was born to Collemastroianni resident Francisco (son of Pietro and Pasquale (?) Martini) and his wife Carolina Di Carlo. Present are his brother Michael DiCarlo and [Sabrineta?] Martini.

Then a lot of language credentialing the people present.

If anyone can help I'd be most appreciative. Thank you!!

This is a baptismal certificate issued on May 14th, 1931.
It states that in the baptismal register of the church of St. Giovanni Battista and Evangelista in Fontechiari was found this record, dated Jan 8th, 1909:
A child, born of Francesco, son of deceased Pietro "de Paschale Martini"*, and Carolina di Carlo, spouses, in a place called "Collemastrojanni" two days ago at 12pm (that is, on Jan 6th), was baptized and given name Giuseppe ("Joseph" in Latin).
Godparents were Michele di Carlo son of Pietro, and Palmira Martini, his wife.

* "de Paschale Martini" might be a double surname, or it might mean "son of Pasquale Martini" (I think it's the latter).

Also, GP seem to be related to parents (maybe even siblings), though there no proof of it.
