Marriage bans info Sicily 1843

Post by Rossonero3 »

Hello, I need help translating items 4,5 & 6, particularly interested in item #4. It is regarding the groom’s father Francesco and looks like he changed his last name from ‘Povietto’? to ‘Vitale’ which is the grooms last name. It looks like it reads ‘Cogne rinato’ (reborn), if this is true why did he do this? If I were to research the paternal line further would I have to search for cognome Povietto rather than Vitale?
Also can’t really make out what #’s 5&6 say also.

Thanks

#4 indicates that Francesco Proietto (this was a surname given to some abandoned children at birth) was then changed to Vitale. If you can find the allegatti/processes (attachments file to the marriage) it will have the death act in it.

#5 state that the mother of the groom and the parent's of the bride gave their consent.

#6 references the certificate of no impediment to the marriage.

Thanks your'e the best!

So is it safe to say that A) there's no looking beyond Francesco since we would never know who is birth parents were? and B) That he was given the surname Vitale because that was the name of his adoptive family?

Also, I'll have to just search the death records for Francesco since for this commune there are no Allegatti or Processetti records available, I wish there were because they are so helpful.

A) there is the possibility that Francesco was "recognized" by his parents at a later date, and given their (father or mother) surname. That would be a "new" birth act written at the time of recognition. At this point we have no idea of the year. HOWEVER, there should be a notation of this recognition on his original birth act, and some information may be available in HIS marriage allegatti.

B) The surname VITALE may have been that of his natural parent(s)... OR... of his adoptive family. Further investigation is needed.

Here is the link to the marriage record in Sciacca that you posted. This makes it easier to see the whole record...

What comune is the marriage record from that you posted?

Great info, thanks again. Unfortunately there are no Allegatti records available. Since Francesco's son Giuseppe was born around 1814, I would guess that Francesco was born at least 20-30 years prior so I don't believe I will be able to locate his birth record unless, like you say there MAY be a new record at a later date. However I should be able to find his death record which may give some information.

The comune of the records are Sciacca, Agrigento. Here's the link starting w/ the 1st page of the record:

Since Francesco's son, Giuseppe, was given the surname Vitale upon his birth, it is probable that Francesco's surname was changed prior to 1814...

Certainly finding the death act may provide some information :-)

FYI - he does not appear in deaths from 1839-1842 (I checked only the indices)

Great find, mmogno!

This is a death act for Francesco Vitale in June 1843. :D
He was age 50, a sailor, and the husband of Brigida Marinello.
He was the son of deceased Giuseppe [Vitale] a sailor, and of deceased Saveria Vitale

Wow, thanks!

So Francesco's father is listed as 'Giuseppe' but no surname, usually because it's the same as the child (Vitale), and his mother is listed as Saveria Vitale, very interesting. Would that mean possibly that Francesco's father Giuseppe was also Vitale? Or perhaps Saveria claimed Francesco later has her son and then married Giuseppe?

btw, what is the profession listed for the 1st declarant? His name is Antonio [?]

Saveria is always listed with her own Surname (maiden name).

Thanks Tessa78, I know that the wives/mothers are always listed with maiden names, but it's very curious that her and Giuseppe share the Vitale surname.

Online birth acts begin in 1820. You will need to write to the Comune of Sciacca to request Francesco's birth act, and perhaps the marriage age of Giuseppe and Saveria.
