Would someone please take a look at the following death record and tell me what the word is prior to Rosa de Salvo. I am pretty sure Rosa was deceased but the word is unfamiliar.
Thank you

Re: Death Record Number 59
It says: domiciliata quivi, marito di Rosa de Salvo (domiciled here, husband of Rosa de Salvo)
So this record indicates that she was still alive when her husband died. (He was not the vedovo (widower) of Rosa de Salvo.

Re: Death Record Number 59
Thank you Angela, I was reading it all as one or two word.
If I may, another question.
I am reviewing another death record where all of the names match up and the age is close but there is no mention of a husband who was still living at the time. One of the witnesses has the same last name as her husband and would be the right age to be his uncle. I am trying to confirm this but wanted to know how likely it is not to show a husband's name?
Thank you,
Karen

Re: Death Record Number 59
Hi Karen
Out of the BMD's, the death records would be the least reliable for accurate information, for various reasons. (Often the people declaring the death didn't know the deceased and/or their family situation.) You can't assume that because one of the witnesses has the same last name as the deceased's husband, that he is related – so good on you for looking further into this.
Anyways, the short answer is that clerical errors did happen, information was omitted from the records or incorrect ones written, and some times also the declarants either didn't report the full facts because they didn't know them. (I would still keep looking though.)
(I've had this happen in my records too, but it's usually been in my earlier records. When I've persisted on I've often found other records, that have helped me to establish that the Death Record is the correct one. Always remember the marriage allegati – if the couple had children, look for their marriages and hopefully their allegati. Some times I've actually found nothing in the allegati to help but then later have discovered that there was a second marriage a few years later, with allegati containing the information I needed.)
Hope this helps.

Re: Death Record Number 59
Angela,
Further researched the family and found all four of Maria Francesca died before her, the oldest only living to age 4. Her husband Giovanni Ricciardi married the following year. Can you tell me if there is anything in his second marriage that would further confirm that he was Maria Francesca’s husband? Unfortunately there are no marriage publication on line for this year.
Marriage number 3

There are 2 Memorandums objecting Giovanni’s and his cousin Giovanni marriages in 1864, Numbers 1 and 2

The notifications are at

I have read references to opposition to a marriage but since this is new to me would like to learn more. Do you know of a good source to learn about the process and a translation of the form so I will know what to look for?
Thank you,
Karen

Hi Karen, I'll take a look at these documents for you, explain about memorandum, which are basically just marriage banns - there was no "objection to the marriage," and yes, on the first page of the marriage, where it lists the allegati for that marriage, it says that the third document presented was the Death Act of his first wife. Good job. Will get back to you.

Marriage of Giovanni Riccardi and Concetta Filomena
Just following up. So basically the memorandum is a marriage bann, which was posted on the door of a town hall, letting people know that a couple intended to marry, and giving people the opportunity to come forward if they knew of any reason why the marriage should not take place (any reason for opposing the intended marriage) . There was very limited information included on the memorandum – generally only the couples names and the names of their respective parents were included. The Notificazione (Notification) or Publicazione (Publication) is also a Marriage Bann but is much more detailed. Usually the information found in these Marriage Banns is also contained in the Marriage Document, but I've also found with my records, and it may be the same with yours, (my roots are also in the Province of Potenza), that sometimes the Notificazione give more information about the respective parents than the Marriage Document, so I also refer to them as well.
Anyway let's have a look at what your records include here:
Memorandum
Sunday, 3 January 1864, 8 pm
Basically it is saying that the notification has been affixed to the door of the Town Hall within the terms set out by the law for the solemn promise of marriage between Giovanni Ricciardi, son of Vincenzo Ricciardi and of Rosa de Salvo;
and Concetta Filomena de Salvo, daughter of Vincenzo (de Salvo) and of Carolina Santomartino.
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0
Abridged:
Atto di Notificazione
Chiaromonte: 22 January 1864:
On Sunday, 3 January 1864, we Giuseppe Allegretti, Mayor, of Chiaromonte, ….. notify everyone that ...
Prospective Groom: Giovanni Ricciardi, 34 yo, contadino, living Chiaromonte, son of Vincenzo (Ricciardi), possidente, living Chiaromonte, and of Rosa de Salvo, living here, and
Prosective Bride: Concetta Filomena de Salvo, 21, daughter of Vincenzo (de Salvo), possidente, living Chiaromonte and of Carolina Santomartino, living here.
…. promise to marry.
We also note that nineteen days has passed, without any opposition to the marriage.
Abridged:
Marriage No 3:
Chiaromonte: 27 January 1864
Groom: Giovanni Ricciardi, 34, born in Chiaromonte, contadino, living Chiaromonte, son of Vincenzo (Ricciardi) possidente, living Chiaromonte, and of Rosa de Salvo, living here
Bride: Concetta Filomena de Salvo, 21, born Chiaromonte, living here, daughter of Vincenzo, trafficante (dealer/merchant), living Chiaromonte, and of Carolina Santomartino, living here
Then the Allegati are handwritten at the bottom of the first page:
1. Act of Birth of the Groom
2. Act of Birth of the Bride (Simile (similar) della Sposa)
3. Act of Death of the First wife of the Groom
4. Act of Notification “without” (senza) Opposition ….... etc
The marriage took place in the Parish of San Giovanni on 1 February 1864.
On page 2 all the witnesses are named.
Unfortunately it does note anywhere the name of Giovanni Ricciardi's first wife, but we know had one.
