Help reading one more document please

Post by lmarsango »

I'm getting better at reading these yay! I can read most of the important stuff on here-ages etc. I have cut out the section that I need help on. Frederico's parents? Also Maddalena Zanella was born where? Thanks in advance. (I'm including the whole page also just in case I missed it somewhere else) And the link on Ancestry https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/18 ... 9879-00012

Thank you again Erudita!

How can his parents be unknown? Yet he knows his last name?
Well that looks like a dead end. Bummer.

Federico was born in Venezia and was age 37 at the time of his marriage, so he was born about 1834. Unfortunately, there are no online records for that time period, so I can't retrieve a copy of his birth record and tell you the circumstances of his birth. His surname Funario would be an invented one. When infants were abandoned, they were still presented at the town hall and, at that time, the town official would assign them a first and last name. In some towns, it was common to give abandoned infants the same surname such as Esposito, for example. In other towns, the surnames were variations in spelling of each other. This is what happened with my paternal grandfather. The town official was assigning surnames which began with the letter V and then would just vary the letters which followed the initial letter. More than likely, Federico was the only person in his town with the surname Funario. In the case of my grandfather, his so-called natural parents (no DNA tests to prove paternity at the time) married 6 weeks after his abandonment and then, when he was two years and 10 months old, went to a town notary to reclaim him. At that time, the town notary changed the surname he was assigned at birth to the surname of the supposed natural father. So my grandfather and his so-called natural father were the only two people in their town with their surname. It was rare though for an abandoned child to be reclaimed.

Oh wow that is interesting. I was wondering why I wasn't seeing any more "Funario" records while searching.

Believe me, Lynda, I understand your disappointment concerning this info about your ancestor. I even found the birth records of my grandfather's parents and, believe it or not, their surnames were invented as well, as they too had been abandoned as infants. So you have reached a dead end with Federico's ancestral line.

Yes sadly I have and I will keep that in mind. My ultimate goal is to match my daughter's dna to some Italian ancestors, so any names I find that are not in her tree could be related to Frederico's side.

Do you know if he would most likely have been raised in an orphanage in Venice? Are there any records from orphanages?

Lynda
It's hard to say if he was in an orphanage or handed over to an external wetnurse who may have received a stipend from the city for his feeding (he would have been breastfed) and for his upbringing. That's why it's unfortunate that we can't access his birth act. I did find the following link which is in Italian and English, which may give you some insight into the situation with abandoned children in Venice. I don't know if any orphanage records are available. I have never seen any.
