Maria Francesca Battista marriage

Post by khoney »

Below are links to the marriage act and publication for Maria Francesca Battista in 1897. Her mother Polissena is shown as deceased. There are several years of scanned documents missing in the time period of when she died (1876 to 1897) so I was hoping there would be something in these records that would narrow the time period.

Maria Francesca was 47 years old when she married in 1897. Is there anything to indicate she had been married before?

Yes, she is identified as "vedova" - widow. The Publication of banns states that her husband Francesco Sergio died in New York on 18 August 1881.

Here is the death act entry for Francesco Sergio on 13 April 1893. Maria Francesca Battista appeared before the official in Chiaramonte with an act of death of Francesco Sergio, age 43, farmer, which she received on 30 August 1883. She asked that it be transcribed from the English into the register of deaths. Francesco Sergio was the son of deceased (both) Nicola [Sergio] and of Concetta Costanza. He died of a fractured skull from an railway accident in Newark, New York.

AND--- In the marriage act, her mother is not deceased. She is residing in Chiaramonte... her father Pasquale is deceased. BUT --- in the publication of banns - her mother is listed as deceased :?

*** Edit to add

It appears Polissena was alive in 1882. She is one of the declarants in this death (#47) of Giovanni Sergio, the 12 month old child of deceased Francesco [Sergio] and of Francesca Battista [Maria Francesca?]

Thank you so much Tessa, this greatly reduces the time period to search. I double checked the indexes but no luck finding Ploissena. There is only one index missing. Hopefully I can narrow the time a bit more so I will not need to search the scanned documents page by page to be sure her entry was not missed before accepting her death took place in the year missing.

Just a thought...
Because the clerk has Polissena listed as both living and deceased in the marriage documents, it May Be that she died some time just before the marriage, causing the confusion. I would start with 1897 and work backwards.
