Who are the parents?

Post by NickAndreola »

With help from Tessa, Livio & Pipo, (to name a few!) I've made progress in my understanding of the records available online. This one seems to break the pattern and I'm not able to Grok what goes on...

Numero d'Ordine Settantadue / Orsogna Maria Giuseppa:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043436

Carmela Petrone reported the birth to the mayor, Giacinto Fratta. Saverio Pannichella & Giuseppe Iacovella were witnesses.

The midwife, Carmela Petrone, presented a child who was born "to a woman who does not consent to be named."
There is no mention of the father...

Both the given name and surname were provided by the official.

What would be your best guess to the context of this situation?

A child born out of wedlock?

Any idea on how the official would assign a name? Who would have raised this child?

Sorry

Sorry
Child out of wedlock is certainly a strong possibility, but there were other reasons for abandonment, or not acknowledging the child.
Some children were claimed later by the parents (perhaps after marrying), and others might have been adopted, though many were not. It was the official's responsibility to give the child a name and a surname, usually one [surname]that did not exist in the town.
Generally, the child was given into the care of a wetnurse for care and nutrition; and sometimes the mother (who was not named for the record) cared for her child.

Here is an article you might consider reading to learn more about it.

Thanks for the link, Tessa. That helped on a couple of other records that were also 'unusual' .
