Also, what does the note in the observations column mean? It seems the say "l'auguirinio Milone Sindu." Was there an augur involved? "Tarquinio Milone Sindaco"

The next entry says 7 detto, then the one after that is 9 detto, and yours is 11 detto. The word detto means as mentioned above. So it's kind of like using ditto marks in place of writing the month July over and over.

Ohhh like our "ditto" okay that totally makes sense, I just wasn't expecting it. Brilliant, okay good to know, thanks!

I hope you're not tired of me yet

Any chance you lend me your expertise once more? I'm trying to make out the surname of the mother of Maria Rosa Massimo.

In the attached index she is located in row 121. In the attached birth certificate her name is written at the end of the 13th line of text.

Maria... Safia? Sure it's not Sujca. I'm lost.

I'm reading Susca in the index, which is a name found in the town. (In the actual record it looks more like Sasca but I'd say it's Susca.)

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 2.jpg.html

I have a new challenge with the same Maria Susca... So I'm trying to find her and her husband Aurelio Massimo's parents' names via their marriage certificate. I started in the year their daughter I descend from was born and searched each year back until I found them in a marriage index. This page shows what appears to be Aurelio Massimo and Maria Teresa Susca. Quite a few things are confusing me:

I think this is Aurelio, but here it looks more like Valerio. Is this the wrong man? What does it say where his parents' names should go? I can make out "genitori," obviously, but not the first word. I assume it means his parents are unknown or he was an orphan or "illegitimate" child?

What is Maria's mother's name? Prudenza de Bettis? I think I'm misreading the cognome.

Naturally I figured the actual marriage certificate could show the names clearer or at least help compare letters, but while it says they are #39 and wed on 24 Settembre, the entry for #39 is another couple and there is no entry for that date! What am I doing incorrectly?

Thanks again for your time!

Yes, it is Valerio Massimo, parents unknown (genitori ignoti)

Maria's mother was Prudenza de Bellis

Here's the marriage entry here: http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

No 44: 23 September 1843
Right Side Column: Marriage occured on 24 September 1843.

It says that the groom, Valerio Massimo, 23 yo, contadino was found exposed on 24 April 1820, son of 'uncertain' parents – so yes a foundling.

With these records, go by the date, not by the entry number.

Wow thanks again!

I'm confused by Valerio, though. The birth record for my ancestor Maria Rosa Massimo clearly says Aurelio is the father, so I wonder if this is not the right couple? Or, if he was a foundling, was there confusion with his name and it changed?

I went to the 1820 book of births and could not find any entry made for him around that date...

Here is Valerio Massimo's Birth Act which appears as No 3 in the Diversi, in case you were wanting it:

If you want it translated, I suggest you set up a new thread as it may get lost here.

Thanks for posting this record. I was about to ask you for a copy of one. Will take a look at it in a moment.

Hmm... this says Aurelio is 26 in 1849 so that would put his birth around 1823, not 1820. I think I may have the wrong couple...

I'm looking for an Aurelio Massimo and Maria Susca married before 1849, and I guess this Valerio Massimo and Maria Teresa Susco married 1843 are not quite it.

I also can't find a birth record for Aurelio in 1822, 1823, nor 1824...

Sometimes errors are made in birth records? Is this 1849 birth record their first child?

I'll take a quick look and see if I kind find anything.
