Brick Wall Hit!

Post by deejasmine »

Hello! I have been searching for my GG-Grandmother's death date.

Maria (Genovese) Seminara
B Aug 1845 Alimena, Sicily
M July 9th, 1863 Alimena, Sicily
to Ignazio Ferrara (b1837 d4-10-1900)
I Nov 24, 1897

Mother to 5 children

Census confirms:
1900 - Pawling NY
1910 - Manhatten
1920 - Federal Census Brooklyn
1925 - NY State Census Brooklyn

I cannot find her in the 1930 Census

Where else can I look for her information??
Thanks ~Denise

Was Maria living with one of her children in the 1920 and 1925 Census?

Can you post a link to the census in which you found her last?

To clarify: Her married name was Ferrara? Widow of Ignazio?

She was listed as head of household for both documents - she was the widow of Ignazio and
Ferrara is the spelling the family uses - however Ignazio's death certificate has is listed as Ferrari.

I don't think I have a copy of the census saved - let me look

I can try to find it if you give me the names of the children (an approx. birth years) :-)

Sometimes the name is spelled incorrectly on the next census and so it doesn't pick up on the ancestry search. Try using a child as the main person and that sometimes leads you to the next census.

Here is what I know:
1900 Census - Pawling NY - Living with oldest son Vincenzo Ferrara 2 mos after being widowed
1910 Census - Manhatten NY - Listed as Mary Genovese (maiden name) Living next door to grandson's family and down the street from middle son's family John Ferrara
1920 Census - Brooklyn NY - Listed under Ferrara - Not living near anyone I recognize - Grocery is occupation
1925 NY State Census - Brooklyn NY - Listed under Ferrara - Not a very clear copy but looks like same address from 1920 and Grocery listed again

Hope I did the attachments correctly!

Thanks for your assistance!

For some reason the state census wouldn't attach - no idea why - but now have it!

Looking at the census images you provided (you can post just a link next time. It is easier to view :-) )...

Maria Ferraro is listed as "mother" on the 1925 Census, residing at the same address as Millie De Napli, 34, at the same address [14 Prospect Street]. Is Millie her daughter?

Question: If her maiden name was Genovese, how does the surname "Seminara" fit in?

Genovese is her maiden name - Ferrara her married name and her daughter Rosa Ferrara married Michele Seminara (my G Grandparents)

Her children are: Vincenzo /Rosa (Seminara) / Giovanni / Francesca (Ambrosini) / Luigi Ferrara

Maybe I have the wrong person in 1925 (but the town of Alimena is correct as is the grocery) or I am missing a kid??
