Hi Angela,

The state appears to be California (abbreviated calf?)
The city/town looks like it reads "Loobancs" which may be a phonetic spelling...
A possibility??? City of Los Banos in Merced County

Thank you both for your replies. I really appreciate it. I could see that it was possibly California, but just couldn't work out the first part. I would never have guessed Los Banos - you sure have to think laterally on these passenger lists. It makes sense because I understand other young men from Saponara went to Los Banos for work. Not sure what for though?

The man I am interested in is Francesco Lauria born 1874. A cousin of my mum recently told me that he use to visit America for work, and consequently was able to return to Saponara and purchase land. I was so pleased to find this passenger list but it is the only one that I've come across. If either of you, or anyone else are able to help with further lists/info it would be much appreciated. I've basically only looked, so far, on Family Search, where I found this one.

Thanks again.

Angela :) :) :)

Thanks Tessa. No, not him. His dad was Michelangelo and his wife's name was Carmela. He did have brothers but they were Giuseppe and Antonio.

Grazie. Antonio was born September 1881. What year was this passenger list?

Thank you. I really appreciate you finding this.

This all fits perfectly - Antonio was born 1881 and was 24 in 1905 - so they must be my Francesco and Antonio. :D I wouldn't even have known about this if mum's cousin hadn't mentioned it recently.

Francesco must have than returned to Italia some time after July 1905, because he and Carmela had their second child in December 1906, followed by their 3rd in November 1909. (Their first was born June 1899). I don't have any further information about Antonio, he may have stayed on in Los Banos, really don't know. I "suspect" that Francesco returned to Los Banos at various times, if I interpreted correctly what my cousin said. Obviously I need to investigate further.......

Looks like they both may have traveled back and forth...

Here is a 1911 trip for Francesco (age 33). Arriving New York, leaving wife Carmela in Saponara, going to Fresno, Calif. to "brother-in'law Antonio Di Belli" in Fresno.

Here is a possible trip in 1913 for Antonio (aGe 32). Arriving September in Boston. Leaving wife Marianna in Saponara, going to brother Lauria in Los Banos.

Thank you so much, Tessa. Unfortunately I don't have access to ancestry so I can't see the list. Are you able to post, please. I was wondering whether he'd married so I'm wondering whether he married post 1910. Will go recheck the pre 1910 records now.

These are incredible, thank you so much. These two men were exactly the same height as my nonno - I have his military record. The pics are a bit blury. (It might be that I'm not downloading them properly.) There's a lot of detail there and I notice there's some others from Saponara listed there as well. How could I get clearer images?

Re Francesco's 1911 trip, it looks like it says he was visiting his Uncle? I can't read which uncle that might be. Are you able to see who it was?

Antonio must have gone back to Italia some time post 1909 to marry. I can't see a marriage record for him. I have some post 1909 death indices so will see what I can see there. Would be interested to know who he married..... Marianna ?
