Can I be recognized as an Italian Citizen?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Can I be recognized as an Italian Citizen?

Post by o0vide0kid0o »

Hi, all.
I have an interesting case on my hands. I was born in Palermo, Sicily to an Italian mother who never renounced citizenship. My father (after about a year) went through the judicial system to have me recognized as an American born on foreign soil. I have been told several different things as to how to regain my Italian citizenship. I contacted the AIRE department and was told that if my birth is registered in Sicily I can be recognized and that they’d research this for me. I sent them my documents, along with the registration of my birth in Sicily, but I haven’t heard a single thing back from them in nearly 3 months. Is this normal? Does anyone know if I could contact the commune directly, and how I can find their contact information? This whole process has been very confusing for me as to where I should even begin.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is your father American? If one of your parents is American and you reported a birth abroad that has no impact on your Italian citizenship. I'm confused why your father had to go through courts to do this unless there is more to the story.
Researching surnames: D'Errico, Bellotti (and other spellings), D'Avolio, Calvano, Marano
