Filippo DiPaolo birth record

Post by cjalex »

Can anyone help me translate this birth record? I know it's hard to read but it's the best one I can find online. Any help with exact names and dates would be most appreciated.

Dated May 27, 1888 at 9:20 a.m. in the town hall of San Lupo

Appearing at the town hall to report the birth was Lupo di Paola, age 47, a peasant living in San Lupo. He reported that, on May 26, 1888 at 4:20 P.M., in the house at #31 via Pergola, his legitimate wife, Maria Pascala (Pasqua) di Blasio, who was living with him, gave birth to a male infant who was being presented and given the name, Filippo Sisto Antimo (di Paola). Witnesses to the declaration of the birth, and presentation of the infant, were Aquilio Tedeschi, age 55, a civile (landowner), and Luigi di Blasio, age 58, a ferraro (blacksmith). *

*No relationship is given in the record of the declarant and the town hall witnesses. Normally the witnesses to the declaration of the birth, and presentation of the infant, were just individuals who hung around at the town hall and served as witnesses as needed.

The declarant did not sign the document, as he was illiterate.

Thank you so very much! Is the last name actually Paola and not Paolo?

You're very welcome. Yes, it ends in an "a."

In the body of the record, the d is written as a small letter, so the surname is written as "di Paola," as in my translation above. In the margin, it is written with a capital D, so "Di Paola," as Livio has pointed out. When I said the surname ended in an "a," I was only referring to the second part of the surname and not to the surname as a whole. Sorry if I caused any misunderstanding.

I do understand that the last name is 2 words, but after he emigrated to the US, all records show it as Di Paolo, ending in an "o," so I was just wondering if in Italy it was most likely Di Paola or Di Paolo. Actually, he eventually changed it to DePaul, as that is how the family came to be called. Also, looking at his full name, are Sisto and Antimo common names in Italy? Please excuse my ignorance. I'm just hoping that once I have all the spellings correct, I can better trace the ancestry. Thank you so much for your help.
