Criminal history

Post by cportante »

Ciao a tutti!

I am wondering if you can help me decipher some words.

It looks like my GGGM had a couple of brushes with the law. The second line is easier to read, I think the first may have gotten distorted in an earlier scan. Still, I'm not sure what the offense was in either. I can only read the location, date and fine amount (in the second case).

Pretore/i Barisciano 27-02-1904 g ___?___ per __?__ (Magistrate(s) Barisciano 27-02-1904 ... for ...)
" " 17-10-1903 L37 multa per __?__ (Magistrate(s) Barisciano 17-10-1903 37 lire fine for...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated! She had a reputation over here in the US, too, although I'm not sure she ever got charged with anything. She did have to get escorted to the state line once, though, I'm told!

Mille grazie!
Chris

OK, so I think I deciphered some more: "per un ora" at the end of the last line. Was she held for one hour? I am hoping context and some of the visible letters may make this obvious for someone out there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Grazie!

I see the word "multa" on the bottom line. I believe that was an imposed fine. Also found the article below about the penal code in Italy that was in effect from 1889

Thank you so much for that link, erudita! I have been trying to find info on Italian penal code prior to its current manifestation and was coming up with very little.

Someone on another board kindly translated those lines for me. I couldn't read the crime, but it apparently was "lesione" -- one time she got the fine you mention and for the other occurrence she "did some time" (well, a few days, at least). I would love to know the details, but that's unlikely to ever happen. I wonder how serious the injury she caused was and how!

Here is what that kind individual got out of the two handwritten lines:

Pretore Barisciano 27-02-1904 g(iorni) 19 det(enzione) per lesione
Pretore Barisciano 17-10-1903 L37 multa per lesione

As I said, she was known to be a very difficult person among the family (putting it nicely). There is also evidence that she was litigious herself. She also met a very strange end...she was hit in the head by a baseball while walking near Arthur Avenue in the Bronx and died from the trauma of the skull fracture. Was it really an accident as the coroner claims? Who knows?!

Chris

I'm glad you were able to get someone on another website to help with the translation of the two lines. I was totally at a loss for the last word. Hopefully the link I found will provide you with some specifics about the code. I know it was changed in 1930.

Also, interesting story about the incident on Arthur Avenue. I'm a native of the Bronx, but not of that specific area, although I'm familiar with it.

Hello mmogno! I thought you might be a contributor here, too! Thank you so much for these links I'm going to see if I can request the information by email; otherwise, it will be a project for me when I go to L'Aquila next year (hopefully).

Erudita: Thanks again. I'm going to see if there was an article on the incident in the Bronx in Il Progresso.
