Hello,
I am helping a distant relative in her effort to identify the birth mother of her grandfather who was born in the Brefotrofio in Parma in 1882. The birth was registered with the city of Parma, and the baptism registered by the diocese, but the name of the birth mother was withheld at her request in both records. However, both certificates refer to a birth recorded at the Brefotrofio itself, and even state the record number. The granddaughter tried to find this record, but was told that the Brefotrofio records were destroyed in a fire. Maybe. Maybe not. We've heard this one before...
Has anybody located records from the Brefotrofio in Parma?
Does anybody know of a good genealogist in Parma who could help her resolve this issue?
Thanks!

Re: Records from il Brefotrofio di Parma
The mother's name was not withheld at her request but by law. Unmarried women were not named to protect them from the evidence of their sin.
Child abandonment in Italy was anonymous then and is still that way today if the mother wants it to be.
