Death records

Post by clerio »

Hi all!

My ancestor Generoso was born in 1834 and died somewhere between 1860-1885. I am trying to figure out which one of these death records may be his. I would appreciate some help with translating. Thank you!

Unfortunately, none of these individuals lived more than 2 years. If you look in the text of the document imediately following the name Generoso diSpirito you see "di __________." This is the age of the person. Mesi is months old at death which is three of them and one was two years old "anni due."

Also, if you go down a few lines, you see the word “celibe” meaning unmarried. If the person was married or widowed it would be indicated here with the spouses name.

Hi Crystal

Here is the Death Act you are looking for:

Death Act No 28: Generoso di Spirito
Luogosano: 3 November 1873

He died on 2 November 1873, at his home in Strada della Fontana. He was 40 yo, born and living in Luogosano, a Calzolaio (cobbler), the son of deceased Carminantonio di Spirito and of Veronica Pepe, a contadina, the husband of Angelantonia Martino of deceased Benegno, contadina, living Luogosano.

Crystal, how I was able to find it quickly, was by looking for his death extract amongst his son Benegno and Maria Ferrante's marriage allegati: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

Another little trick to bear in mind, i.e. when the allegati are available.

Now I am working on trying to find Carminantonio and Veronica's marriage act. :) In the above record, when it says "the husband of Angelantonia Martino of deceased Benegno" that means her father's name was Benegno?

Thank you for the compliment! This is a huge shift in gears from doing genealogy for my American revolutionary war period ancestors. ;)

That would have been very interesting. It's actually a topic I know very little about.

Yes, that is my understanding. Do you know when their first child was born?

The records during that period were so scarce, so this is a welcome change. :)

I am not entirely sure when their first child was born. What I do know is Carminantonio was born around 1802 and his son Generoso was born in 1834. I am sure they had more children, I just haven't gotten that far yet ;) I was hoping to find Carminantonio's father's name on the marriage record.

Here it is. They married in 1828.

Carmine Antonio di Spirito's father was Pasquale di Spirito.

:o :o :o Wow! Thank you SO much. I looked in that year, I must have skipped right over it. LOL

If it isn't too much trouble, could you translate the entire record for me?

Sorry, I'm in a bit of a rush to go out, so this is what I have extracted for you:

Marriage Act No 2: Carmine Antonio di Spirito and Veronica? Pepe
Luogosano: 23 February 1828

Married in the church the same day.

Groom: Carmine Antonio di Spirito, 28 yo, born this town, calzolaio, living in Luogosano, son of Pasquale di Spirito, a contadino, living in this town, and of Elisabetta Boccuzzi?, living with her husband.

Bride: Vronecca?? (Veronica?) Pepe, 17 yo, born and living this town, daughter of Angelo Pepe, fabbricatore, living this town, and of Felicia di Lonardo, living with her husband.

The parents appeared to give their consent.

In one place Veronica's father's name is spelled Angelo, and another it is spelt Angiolo. I don't think the clerk knew how to spell Veronica. I'm 99% sure that this is them. Just the way they have spelt Veronica bothers me a little.

You should be able to find Veronica's birth record, circa 1811. That will confirm things.

Edit to Add:

Marriage Banns: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0 - Vronecha?

And here:
http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0 - Vronecha

Probably a mispelling of Veronica??????

Angela,

Thanks again for your help translating! So much great information here. I am sure you are right in that Veronica's name was just misspelled. I was going to look up her birth record, but I think the birth records only go back as far as 1816, unless I am missing something.
