Hello,
I need help with a translation for a birth record. Most of the births in the area are recorded with the fill-in-the-blank template, but this one is not. So I want to make sure I have a clear understanding of the details.

From what I could gather from my reviewing the document is that some other birth is also referenced. I am attaching a copy of that birth record, too.

My understanding that the second birth record is that Maria Ederi was born but no parent could be listed. I cannot figure out what was written in the margin under her name.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The margin note is an annotation of the "recognition" act of 28 July 1898, giving the same information that you have stated in that act.
The original birth act (dated 12 July 1898) states that the child was born to a woman who does not want to be named (and no father is mentioned.) The child was given the name Maria Giuseppina Natalia and the surname Ederi.
The other (the recognition) was dated 28 July 1898, and Adalgisa Contini, 22, the mother of the child, who is the unmarried daughter of living Achille [Contini] and Adelaide Marchiolini, presented a copy of an act of recognition of her natural daughter, Maria Giuseppina Natalia Ederi ,to the official to be put in the register. The child's name is now Maria Contini.

Thanks for the translation.
This raises several questions for me. I'm not sure if this thread is the best place for them to be answered, but i'm wondering the following:
1. This seems quite strange. Is this something that happens frequently?
2. Why would the mother chose not to be named initially and then later have herself be recognized?
3. Can I safely assume that Adalgisa Contini is in fact the mother?
4. Is there any significance to the surname Ederi? I can't find anyone else with this surname in the region (Parma)

This raises several questions for me. I'm not sure if this thread is the best place for them to be answered, but i'm wondering the following:
1. This seems quite strange. Is this something that happens frequently? YES
2. Why would the mother chose not to be named initially and then later have herself be recognized? Usually because she was unmarried. The child would have been considered abandoned, so later she decided she wanted to raise her child and came forward.
3. Can I safely assume that Adalgisa Contini is in fact the mother? Yes, she attests to being the natural mother to the child.
4. Is there any significance to the surname Ederi? I can't find anyone else with this surname in the region (Parma) When abandoned children are presented to the official for the recording of the birth act, and the parents are unknown, the child is given its names (first and surname) by the official. The surname is usually a "fantasy name" - one that does not exist in the town.
