Polish/Austrian Forums?

Post by mkaykrista »

I'm wondering if there are any resourceful Polish and Austrian forums/websites such as this website on the internet? This website has been a tremendous help with discovering my Italian ancestors, but I'm at a point where it's time to start researching my other European ancestors as well.

My main resources for looking into my Polish and Austrian relatives have been Ancestry and FamilySearch. However, it seems that any information prior to my relatives coming to America is no where to be found on these websites. I strongly believe part of that is because the spellings of their names changed, which in my current research has proven very true.

Any advice would be great, thank you!

The surnames I would be researching are Czegin (Chagin/Chegin), Okal, Kruk, Huzi, Zavoyski (Savoyski) and Tuz.

The census records seem to differ between years, but I can gather that these relatives are Polish, Ukranian, Austrian and/or possibly Russian. The land Galicia also pops up, but from what I gather that land has been folded into another country.

There are not specific forums for Polish / Ukranian, etc. that are as responsive as this group. There are number of databases for individual regions such as the following:

http://www.lostshoebox.com/poland/online-records/
http://www.basia.famula.pl/en/
http://poznan-project.psnc.pl/search.php
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl
https://search.geshergalicia.org
https://genealodzy.pl/changelang-eng.phtml
https://polishforums.com/genealogy/

The most important thing with this region is to identify the village / town. This will allow you to identify where it is today and where it was.

There are also Facebook Groups (https://moonswings.files.wordpress.com/ ... r-2018.pdf) but I have little help from them but are good source for cultural information.

PS: I have Czegin surname in my family tree originating in Lug / Zdynia villages in the Carpathian Mountains region of southern Poland.

If you have some additional information the surname, first name, birth year, village - I will see if I can help.

Thank you so much! I will take a look at these links and hope to find some good info.

My Czegin is Peter Czegin, born June 14 1882 in Austria. I have that he arrived in New York in 1905, and another two sources that show he arrived or came back to New York in 1914. He married Anna Okal, I believe prior to 1912. They eventually settled in the New Haven area of Connecticut and had nine children, one of which was my great-grandfather.

Let me know if you find anything!

Is this your Peter?

I also see two records of a Peter entering via Philadelphia from the village Lug in Gorlice County, Poland.

Do you know his parents or sibling names and ages?

My paternal grandparents came from Lug and Zdynia and I have done a lot of work in these village. I will send you a PM.
