help interpreting Living DNA results please!

Genetic genealogy is the application of genetics to traditional genealogy. Genetic genealogy involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level and type of the genetic relationship between individuals.

help interpreting Living DNA results please!

Post by ottolino »

Ciao a tutti, I decided to take a DNA test and recently got the results.
Since I am struggling a bit with interpreting the data, I thought I might ask you guys! :)

Living DNA is the company I used, and they provided me with 3 sets of data, which you find below. Many thanks in advance for any help!!
Silvio

Family Ancestry - Autosomal DNA
87.1% Europe
-- 68% Europe (South)
-- 7.6% Europe (North and West)
-- 7.1% Europe (East)
-- 4.5% Great Britain and Ireland
12.9% Near East
-- 10.6% Levant
-- 2.2% North Turkey

Given the geographical location of all my recent ancestors (Southern Italy, from 4 towns, where they have been living for at least 250 years), I am not surprised by this result. I guess a whole lot of Southern Italians have Near East genes, we are after all at the crossroads of many cultures! :)

Paternal Ancestry - Y-DNA
Haplogroup: R-M269
Subclade: R-L51
92% Wales
87% Basque
85% Ireland
81% France
81% Catalonia
78% England
72% Spain
72% Italy
60% Portugal
43% Denmark
42% Netherlands
… and a bunch of other places, all less than 36%. How do I interpret this data? Does this mean that my paternal ancestor came likely from Western/Northern Europe, and somehow found his way to Southern Italy a few thousands of years ago? What's with the huge percentages in Wales, Basque Country and Ireland??

Maternal Ancestry - mtDNA
Haplogroup: K
Subclade: K2b1

32% Ashkenazi Jewish
17% Kurdish
14% Druze
14% Belgium
12% Daghestan
12% Ireland
12% Georgia
11% Wales
.. and a bunch of other places, all 10% or less… and Southern Italy isn't even in the list! Again, what does this all mean? How do I make sense of this information?
25% Taranto - Di Castro, Sguro, Schinaja, Padalino, Pisano, Abbracciavento
25% Napoli - Cotugno, Parlato, Tosti
25% Barletta - Lavecchia, Cilli, Curci, Digiovanni, Dipalo
25% Caserta - Santoro, D'Ancicco, Bonelli, Fusco, Di Lucca, Fisone
...
100% me! :)

Hi Ottolino and thanks for sharing this. I find genetics fascinating, but I suck at typing on my phone, so I'll write more tomorrow.

For now, to make it simple, a haplogroup traces you back to your first x or y ancestor with common dna. There are certain parts of dna that get passed down in chunks and don't get recombined, so unless there is a mutation, these chunks can be traced back to a common ancestor that lived hundreds or thousands of years ago.

Keep in mind that this will be narrowed down or traced back farther as more samples of dna are added to the data based.

Do a search for your haplogroup. That should give you some insightful information.

Hello, I don't know anything about livignDNA but I found my biological father through ancestry DNA. Does livingDNA match you with relatives? if not, you would be better off testing with Ancestry DNA or Myheritage. It used to be you could test with Ancestry and then upload for free to Myheritage. You can also up load to gedmatch .com for free from your raw data at ancestry.
